On the Drawing Board
Things are piling up on the drawing board once again. Part of the problem with freelancing is that you never know when the next phone call will be your last for a while. As a result, you tend to take on more work than is good for you, for fear of a possible dry spell just around the corner. I’ve been very lucky in that I seem to get steady work, and it’s a very rare time when I have nothing on the drawing board at all.
Here’s what’s on the board right now:
Marlin Company workplace poster- another image illustrating a teamwork message… this one depicts a bunch of little old ladies beating the stuffing out of the men in a flag football game. This is the initial rough:
Scholastic- a new client, this is the main image of a series of gag-like illustrations of Babylonian king Hammurabi, who wrote one of the earliest sets of laws ever found:
Promo- I’ve been meaning to do a new self caricature for a while now, to use for self promotion and for anytime someone needs an image of me for some speaking engagement or something. This sketch will have to go on hold now as the work is piling up:
MAD- Just got assigned not one but two jobs for MAD #471, a spoof on video games and a spot illustration going after Mel Gibson and his recent fiasco. I just got the scripts so no images on those yet. Should be fun, though!

Hey Tom,
GREAT self-caricature; It’s the first I’ve seen where you don’t look 25! Both yours and Mort’s are very kind! 🙂 Is that tony little hump in your back intentional?
Can’t wait to see the Caric of Mel going anti-semitic on everyone’s ass!
Thanks. Yes, the big, rounded back is intentional. I’m making fun of my posture at the drawing board. I look like a turtle with my head sticking out from under my shoulders as I hunch over the board. I compensated by giving myself massive arms.
GREAT self-caricature;
Do all body builders forget to work on the legs or is this just an exxageration?
