Here is a cool job I did earlier this month that I can finally talk about. I did the art for the release of a new single by the Grammy award winning band “Portugal. The Man.” Here’s their official release image: I did the center sunflower with the mosh pit center. The design folks did the type and added the sky background. Art for a major label/band is a first for me! READ MORE

This past fall I took over as president of the National Cartoonists Society Foundation, which is the charitable arm of the National Cartoonists Society proper. Among some of the initiatives we have in the works is a monthly live drawing event team-up with the folks at 4C Comics Live. 4C Comics has a YouTube channel where they conduct live drawing sessions with comic book artists sort of like a virtual comic con. Participants put in “claims” to request and pay for a drawing which the artist usually does right there on camera. Members of the NCF will be doing a live drawing event with 4C Comics every month and 100%… READ MORE

Get ready for the fallout because it’s time to launch another episode of our nuclear-powered trip through my work at MAD Magazine! This piece is a megaton-o-fun from MAD’s “20 Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2006” from MAD #473, Jan 2007. I think the theme and message is self explanatory. There is no writer credit so this was one of the MAD 20 pieces that was written by the MAD staff. This was another try at a fully digital piece, and I liked the results with this one a lot better than the “religious Video Games” one I had done a few issues ago.… READ MORE

Q: For your most recent MAD cover (issue #23), did MAD tell you to draw in your older style? I noticed that it resembles a lot of your early MAD work. The line width, colors, and shading kind of resemble your earlier MAD work, I’ve noticed that’s the style in many of your older assignments. A: Here’s the cover in question: No, MAD didn’t ask me to work in anything other than my usual style. Actually I am not quite sure what you are seeing in this that seems like an “older” version of my work. To me my earlier MAD stuff looked stiff and… READ MORE

Like so many people, we in the Richmond household were sad to hear of the passing of actor and comedian Bob Saget. Bob is kind of a superstar around here because my oldest daughter The Animated Elizabeth, loves “Full House” and watches the show on her TV and iPad a lot, especially the earlier seasons. Elizabeth is 32 and autistic, and her videos are something that comfort her. She likes watching them over and over, although she has several hundred in her library, mostly Sesame Street, Barney and other kids video series. “Full House” is one of the few typical TV shows she likes and watches.… READ MORE

Better late than never this week… it’s time for another installment of our look back at my work for MAD Magazine! This week we revisit the parody of what was then a brand new TV show called “Grey’s Anatomy”, written by Arnie Kogen and first appearing in MAD #472, Dec 2006. Let’s get to the spoof… stat! For some reason all my sketches and process stuff for this spoof is missing, so I have no pencils or anything to share but the final art. I’ve no idea what happened to all those images. The last panel of the page above is interesting because the character… READ MORE

This week’s sketch is musician, composer, songwriter and actor Tom Waits. Oh sure, he’s a multiple Grammy winner, was named one of Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Songwriters of All Time” and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame… but to me he’ll always be the bug-eating R. M. Renfield in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”! READ MORE

It’s Monday! You know what that means… time for another revolting episode of our long and winding stroll down the road that is my work for MAD magazine. MAD #471, Nov 2006 marked the second time I had multiple pieces in the same issue, and the first time I contributed anything to “The Fundalini Pages”. Back in 2004 MAD added a feature in the front of the magazine called “The Fundalini Pages”. It appeared immediately after the “Letters and Tomatoes” section and consisted of usually four to six pages of short form features like comic strips, single panel gag cartoons, all text pieces, photo gags,… READ MORE
