Sketch o’the Week: Christopher Walken!

May 29th, 2024 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch, and this one needs more cowbell. In “The Deer Hunter”, Christopher Walken‘s character Nikanor “Nick” Chevotarevich endures a lot as a soldier and prisoner of war in Vietnam, and ends up killing himself in a game of Russian roulette in a Saigon gambling den. There’s a lot more to the story. It’s a brutal and tragic film. Walken won an Academy Award for his role. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: WKRP!

November 29th, 2023 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Drawing to drawing, up and down the dial! We continue our classic sitcom series, 1970’s era, with one I’ve been saving to do until Thanksgiving. Here’s the cast of “WKRP in Cincinnati”… Top: Gordon Jump, Gary Sandy, Frank Bonner, Tim Reid, Bottom: Jan Smithers, Richard Sanders, Howard Hessman and Loni Anderson.  “WKRP In Cincinnati” was one of those shows that combined great writing and a prefect cast to create something really special. It only lasted four four season, mostly thanks to CBS’s stupidity in moving it around different times lots and putting it in a “family friendly” time which did not allow for the kind of humor its characters… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week- Batman and Robin!

March 29th, 2023 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Strictly speaking “Batman” was never shown in an after school time slot, but it was a show from that same time period of the late 60’s that didn’t just entertain me, but had a major impact on my entire life. That is no exaggeration! I credit the “Batman” TV show for sending me down the path that ended up with my having a career as a cartoonist. Our sketch this week is of Adam West and Burt Ward in their titular roles as the Dynamic Duo.  I was drawn to the “Batman” tv show as a very young kid… I’m talking two years old. When I heard the opening… READ MORE

MADness #79: Bo Book!

August 29th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

WOOF ARF WOOF WOOF ARF! * *Translation: It’s Monday already?? Yes it is, and that means another barking mad episode of our look back at my work for MAD Magazine! We are now at the 6th issue of what would be my record of appearing in 71 consecutive issues of MAD… but frankly my appearance in MAD #501 (Oct 2009), was a bit of a cheat. The “article” my work was in was called “Excerpts from Bo Confidential- The Secret Files of America’s First Dog“, and was basically a three page advertisement for the book I did with the MAD staff just a few months… READ MORE

Paul Coker Jr., 1929-2022

July 29th, 2022 | Posted in News

The world lost another of the Usual Gang of Idiots recently with the passing of the wonderful Paul Coker Jr. on July 23rd at age 93. Paul was, at least in my opinion, a seriously underrated member of the UGOI. His work was elegant and beautifully drawn, and yet was as forcefully funny as anything else you saw in MAD. His “Horrifying Cliches” was a long running favorite feature in the magazine and what he is probably best known for, but he illustrated hundreds and hundreds of other features that showed the versatility of his unique style. Paul even did a number of TV and… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Boris Karloff!

June 29th, 2022 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

There have been a lot actors who have become iconic in the horror film world, but you would be hard pressed to name one who is more synonymous with the genre than the great Boris Karloff. His last film appearance was over fifty years ago, but he’s still the King of Horror, and he scared the hell out of audiences in the days where you couldn’t show blood or gore onscreen. READ MORE
