A couple of days ago I posted some limited info on the ongoing project I am doing with comedian/ventriloquist Jeff Dunham. I mentioned an upcoming but as-yet-unannounced TV special that might have more details on my contributions to Jeff’s project. Well, that TV special is no longer unannounced: BIO Channel presents “Jeff Dunham: Birth of a Dummy,” a 90-minute special that delivers exclusive, unprecedented access to the life of the entertainer who single-handedly made ventriloquism hip again. The special premieres Tuesday, November 22 at 8PM EST and 9PM PST. From his modest upbringing in Dallas, Texas, Jeff Dunham has transformed into an international sensation. He… READ MORE

Click for a closer look… This week’s sneak peek is the opening splash of Chapter Eight: Caricature in Illustration. In this chapter, I discuss doing caricatures for illustration jobs for publications and other kinds of clients. I go over how “narrative” is a crucial part of successful illustration work, the differences between doing caricature for caricature’s sake and doing it for illustration work, the influence of style and some of the challenges live caricaturists face in taking what they do in a live setting and applying it to publication work. This chapter is 10 pages long and contains 17 illustrations, all of which are examples… READ MORE

Oops…might have drawn Rich’s nose too big . . . Last month I got an email from actor Rich Sommer, who plays the character “Harry Crane” on Mad Men. Turns out Rich is a fan of MAD Magazine, and also originally from Minnesota. He wrote to tell me he and the rest of the cast loved the show’s parody in MAD, and he invited me to attend a fundraiser for a Minneapolis improv theater he’s associated with. I was able to attend, and got to meet Rich and enjoy the show. I donated a signed copy of the magazine for the fundraiser, which may have… READ MORE
