A few months back the website The Cartoonist Studio put together a media press release about their official launch, and tapped a few of the cartoonists on the site to do a drawing for one of the recipients. I did this little spot illustration for the packet that went to The TODAY Show. If you haven’t visited The Cartoonist Studio, you should. It’s a virtual tour of the studios and work of (currently) 23 professional cartoonists including those working in editorial cartooning, comic strips, illustration, gag cartooning, greeting cards, etc. It’s fun to see the faces and places behind some work you are sure to… READ MORE

The Lovely Anna and I went to see “True Grit” this past weekend. I loved it… she was ambivalent. Must be a guy flick. Jeff Bridges was fantastic and the trademark razor sharp dialogue of the Cohen Brother’s films was very prevalent. Sketch done with a Uni-ball Vision Micro-tip ball point pen… not much of a caricature but and interesting face to draw. READ MORE

I have a Google alert set up on my computer so I get a daily e-mail with links to any blog posts or web sites that mention “MAD Magazine“. Usually this results in several links a day where someone mentions MAD either in passing as part of some other subject, uses it as an example of satire or parody or says something to the effect of “I used to read MAD as a kid and loved it. Do they still publish MAD?” More and more these days, though, I get links to sites that are hosting illegally scanned copies of MAD, available for equally illegal… READ MORE

The great Sergio Aragon?¬©s is celebrating 50 years as a professional cartoonist, which since 1963 include his contributions to MAD Magazine. The Huffington Post has an artcile about Sergio and his new book MAD’s Greatest Artists: Sergio Aragon?¬©s: Five Decades of His Finest Works (which, BTW, is as fantastic as you would expect). Congratulations mi amigo… and here’s to many more years! READ MORE

This week’s sketch is of a rather obscure subject. I was catching up on some Netflix movies in the home theater the other day and I watched “28 Weeks Later”, the not so great sequel to the pretty good “28 Days Later” apocalyptic horror film. The character of Tammy was played by a young English actress with the unusual name of Imogen Poots. She had a very haunting look with heavy eyelashes/eyeliner and icy turquoise eyes, a strongly angular face shape with a distinctive nose and bruised looking lips. Quite an arresting look that inspired me to draw her. Anyway, I did this one partly… READ MORE

Q: So I really want to pursue my passion for caricature and cartooning. I want to give it a go but Sunday is my only day off so live gigs are hard to come by. I look on E Lance and Solo Gig but seems like a lot of professionals are on there. So my questions are, should I capture what is going on in local news and submit my work to the A.D. Of the local papers, without contacting them first? Undercut everyone on E Lance? And last, I need to create a portfolio and needed to know what to include. Should it be… READ MORE

This letter is making the rounds on the interwebby, so… I first send my work to MAD back in about 1990 and got a rejection letter at that time, but this is not it. As I recall it was in the form of a checklist that had different reasons for the rejection, and it had the same sort of irreverent humor. Sorry now I didn’t save that… it would have been fun to frame up in the studio. READ MORE
