Here Comes The Orphan Works Bill Again

March 29th, 2008 | Posted in News

I’ve written a number of times about this scourge of evil that lobbyists are trying to push through the legislature. Basically it’s a law that allows publishers or whomever to use creative works without paying the creator if the creator cannot be located by the vaguely defined “reasonably diligent search”. That’s bad enough, when any copyright violator can claim the made a “reasonably diligent search” if busted by the original creator, but previous incarnations also limited the amount a creator could receive in a court case so that it would cost the user of the creative works little or no more to try and use… READ MORE

The Dreaded Deadline Demon

I’m really under the gun trying to get my latest MAD parody job wrapped up. Sorry, but no “How to Draw Caricatures” post this week. Next week for certain, though. READ MORE

On the Drawing Board

I received this project right before I left on vacation and had to kick it out in extremely short order. The concept is a story about studio executives and anonymous comments made by directors and other movie makers about the good and bad things they do (mostly bad). The job was for an L.A. based movie industry magazine, and it was to be in black and white… partly their choice and partly due to the time constraints. One full page and three spots with caricatures of specific studio execs. Since it was in black and white, I thought it would be fun to do a… READ MORE

Briefly: More on the New 12″ Cintiq

December 29th, 2007 | Posted in General

In case you haven’t seen it via Drawn! or the Wisenhiemer Cartoonists forum, here’s a link to Gizmodo’s review of the new 12″ portable Cintiq tablet/display from Wacom. It features a video with unpacking and the creating of a color image of “Bender” from “Futurama” along with subtitles commentary. The verdict from Gizmodo is “professional artists: GET IT!”. Another independent and even more in depth review can be found at my friend Cedric Hohnstadt’s blog. Cedric got the new Cintiq and has good things to say. Both these reviews are highly useful as they are done by working artists, as opposed to being reviewed by… READ MORE

From the Freelance Files…

Last week I posted the final artwork for an ad job I did for Hardee’s Restaurants that was supposed to be used in full page ads in Rolling Stone and other magazines, but ended up not being used at all due to ad budget cuts and instead was used for some internal promotion. That may seem outrageous but that is what sometimes happens in the advertising business. Companies often just burn up money producing images and designs for ad campaigns that never get off the ground. I’ll get paid full rates (and advertising generally pays a lot better than editorial) to do finished art that… READ MORE

On the Drawing Board

October 29th, 2007 | Posted in On the Drawing Board

I’m busy right now on the final coloring for two MAD jobs, plus an ad job and another poster after that, then we’ll see if I get a breather. These “On the Drawing Board” posts are getting harder to do, because I can never show what I am working on as most clients don’t want that made public until after it’s seen print. Instead of “On the Drawing Board” I should started calling them “On the drawing board about 6 weeks ago and I’ve forgotten all about it by now…” October may have been the busiest month I’ve ever had freelance-wise… at one time I… READ MORE

Huzzah!

Virtually every year The Lovely Anna and I go to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, a weekends-only fair in August and September set up like a renaissance village complete with buildings, actors in character, shows, costuming and a ton of food and drink. Our first “Ren Fest” together was 20 years ago, right after we’d become engaged. We’ve only missed a handful of years since. It’s a lot more fun to go in costume than just in jeans and a t-shirt. A lot of people really get dressed up and some play their part as well as any of the ‘professional’ actors on the grounds in… READ MORE

Sketch O’The Week

August 29th, 2007 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

Here’s something a little different for “Sketch O’The Week”. This was a rough sketch for one of several spot illustrations to accompany a story in Fade In Magazine about Hollywood talent agents. The assignment was to do a full page and three spots illustrating some of the points interviewed insiders were making about agents and how they operate. This one was rejected as they didn’t understand what I was trying to convey… the idea was to visually demonstrate how agents like to throw money around driving expensive cars, etc. Of course, a BMW Z-3 is hardly a super car, but I like drawing that car.… READ MORE
