Q: Which is the hardest feature on a face to draw? I’m finding the mouth to always mess things up despite following some of your advice in that realm (i.e. draw the lower line of the upper lip first, etc). I would probably say whichever feature one is trying to caricature, probably has the most impact on whether one’s drawing “works” and that could potentially be the hardest but for me, things seem to fall apart more when I get to the mouth. Any ideas or exercises you would recommend? A: The hardest feature to draw is whatever one you happen to be struggling with… READ MORE

I did this artwork for a job earlier this year for a major national magazine (which shall remain nameless), who then decided not to run the illustrations. The story was about “brothers”, both fictional and in real life. They say they loved the work I did and I did all that was asked of me, but their chief editor could not make up his/her mind about the visuals. I was told they actually contracted four different illustrators to do the art for this article. I am not sure they used any of the art from the four of us. I was paid my full fee,… READ MORE

Thought this was interesting. This is an ad on Playbill.com looking for comedy performers for a new live show. For those that don’t know, there was a MAD live show Off-Broadway back in 1966, written by MAD writers Larry Siegel and Stan Hart, and the original cast included Linda Lavin and Jo Anne Worley. I have no clue who is behind this, what connection MAD really has to it (which could range from 100% to DC Entertainment only licensing out the MAD name ala the FOX TV show). I’ll have to ask the MAD staff about it. READ MORE

It’s the final season of “American Idol”, so here’s a look back at one of the two pieces I did about the show over the years in MAD. These are the pencil roughs and final artwork for “You Can Write the Next American Idol Single!”, written by Desmond Devlin and appearing in MAD #466, June 2006. It’s actually kind of amazing how many of the people in this piece are still somewhat relevant. READ MORE

TPT just posted the segment featuring me that will air this Sunday at 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm on the TV show “MN Original”. The YouTube version is above but you should go watch it on the MN Original website, where the video quality is really terrific. I’ve been familiar with MN Original for some time, and it’s a great program. My pal, comic book superstar Doug Mahnke was profiled there a couple of years ago, and they profile Minnesota artists, actors and musicians from all walks of life on the show. I was very honored to be asked to be on the… READ MORE

Looks like it’s that time again… no questions to answer in the mailbag. I actually only have to post this maybe once or twice a year, and only because many of the questions I get are repeats of ones I have answered more than once in the past (I’ve had this feature running for over nine years, and this is the 450th “mailbag” post) or of the “please show me how to crosshatch” variety that are impossible to answer in a few paragraphs. It’s entirely possible that people have run out of questions. There are only so many questions people might have about freelancing, illustration,… READ MORE
