Another Soggy MAD Sneak Peek!
September 15th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine
Here’s another peek at a portion of the splash page from the new feature my CLAPTRAP co-hort Desmond Devlin and I did for the next issue of MAD, which is officially the 70th Anniversary issue of the magazine. Yes, it’s a movie parody… have you figured out which film yet? If not, you’ll get another peek next week!

I know the answer to the question, but have promised Tom NOT to reveal the answer. Maybe some of the Claptrap supporters can figure this out. So post this also on the Claptrap page. All I’ll say for now is: I’m not surprised by the selection of the film being parodied.
Before seeing your photo clue, I was really hoping it would have been your most recent Star Wars parody (so that MAD may officially complete its tradition of doing all nine movies).
David, That should have been done many moons ago. Unfortunately, for Mad, they missed out. We, who are supporting the project, will rejoice on the fact that we have seen and read all the Star Wars films related to the Skywalker saga.
Too late? I’m not so sure. After all, all “new” MAD Magazines have recycled content. Anything fresh will come as a welcome surprise. Once Tom & Des maximize their Claptrap profits, I would totally be fine with MAD including this fine material. To be honest, I think Star Worse: Plagiarizing Skywalker just might be the best parody that’s ever been done (and Lord knows, there’s plenty of stiff competition).
I doubt that will ever happen, even after the spoof is officially in print in CLAPTRAP. MAD/DC/WB/Discovery or the next corporate monstrosity that buys them out will insist of owning the rights to the spoof and that won’t work. If MAD offered to print it with only the rights to appear in that single issue, we’d probably do it, but that’s VERY unlikely.
I think the Claptrap book will have the best work by both Tom and Dez since they have both taken their time to do the work, which I don’t mind at all. I do wish the parody of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker did get published in Mad, though. Oh well, at least the book will cover 12 films that were never parodied by Mad. It’s been a fun ride and wait for me.
Tom, I agree, It’s not likely that the Star Wars spoof would be in Mad Magazine. I’m ok with that.
I have a question about “Claptrap.” Does one have to be involved in the crowd-funding aspect to obtain a copy, or will this be available at Barnes and Noble as well, or digitally on Comixology? If it is available as a regularly sold product, will it be hard to acquire, i.e. limited in run? Thank you. (I hope to be able to get this, especially with all the parodies in it; my favorite to anticipate is “The Blues Brothers”. I think the concept of focusing on parodies over articles is a wise one, reminds me of how “Cracked” and “Sick Magazine” used to operate. I wish the reprint model Mad is using would perhaps consider focusing on the parodies for some issues. And one suggestion: perhaps after the crowd-funded hardcover (?) is sold out, maybe go to a paper print-on-demand version to keep it available?)
You do not have to be a backer to get a copy. We will be printing more copies than it will take to fulfill all the backer’s orders, and they will be available both here in my Studio Store and on Amazon. It’s very unlikely it will be available in brick and mortar stores like Barnes & Noble. I do have a distributor for “The Mad Art of Caricature” and we could have them distribute CLAPTRAP to wholesalers like Ingram and Baker & Taylor, who in turn supply bookstores, but we have no mechanisms to advertise/promote the book so that bookstores even know it’s there to order. Never say never but unlikely.
As for availability after the first printing is out, we’ll worry about that after the book is done, printed, and our initial printing is running low.
