Behind the Scenes- The Hunger Pains Parody
Final splash page, sans words…
Since EW.com scooped me on the sneak peek of the MAD parody of The Hunger Games, this post will be more of a “behind the scenes” of the job. As always, clicky image to embiggen. The writer of the parody was Desmond Devlin.
First pencil rough . . . Grade: F-
Above is the first pencil rough of the splash. This was a complex splash, because all the word boxes were being spoken by one person (Stanley Tucci’s host character “Cesear Flickerman”), there were a LOT of word boxes, necessitating three rows, and most of them described a character that needed to be near the box that describes them. So, I did something I seldom do . . . I drew the different elements separately and scanned them in as layers, allowing me to move and resize them as needed while the art dept played with word balloon placement. After some messing about, this second version was done:
This worked better, and then I was able to go to finals. Here are the inks:
Here are some pencil roughs of other pages:
And here’s a couple of final panels, sans word boxes, that are not part of the EW sneak peek:
You’ll have to go out and buy the issue to get the LOST reference!!

You have really captured the magic of the Mort Drucker days of MAD. I really enjoy your work. After the writing is in about how long does it take you to go from pencils to inks and then color (excluding revisions and submittal time)?
Really top notch. I am STILL a huge fan!
Tom,
Awesome work, I always enjoy.
I just finished your book while on vacation…it is great! I used up a highlighter! Wish I had it a long time ago. Thanks!
You’re a genius! 🙂
Amazing stuff, Tom!
Shouldn’t it be “hunger pangs”? In any case, nicely done.
