Sunday Mailbag: What’s Next?

July 7th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: What’s next for you if MAD is really done publishing new stuff? A: I’ve had a lot of people contact me the last few days and ask me this question or some variation of it. I’ll let this serve as a catch all answer. First off, things won’t change much for me until at the earliest this fall. I just finished my assignment(s) for MAD #9 late last month. That issue comes out in August, and I have already been assigned at least one parody for #10, possibly along with another piece as well. That work will be due in late August/early September. After… READ MORE

Saving MAD?

July 5th, 2019 | Posted in General

To misquote Mark Twain: “The report of MAD‘s death have been greatly exaggerated” Many news outlets are reporting that MAD is done as of issue #10. That is not the case, and my post yesterday made it very clear that the magazine would continue to publish with issue #11, but would feature new cover art and interiors with reprinted classic material as opposed to all new material. News stand distribution will stop, and the magazine will only be available through current subscriptions and via the direct market (i.e. comic book shops). That is all 100% confirmed as of this writing. That said, these officially stated… READ MORE

I’ll be a special guest at Atlanta Comic Con next week, July 12-14th at the Georgia World Congress Center! I’ll have my usual bunch of junk plus copies of the new Sketch o’the Week Vol 2 and a new mini-print or two. Hope to see you there! READ MORE

The End of the MADness

July 4th, 2019 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Yesterday contributors to MAD Magazine officially got the news that, after 67 years of continuous publication that began with Harvey Kurtzman‘s brilliant comic book and eventually evolved into the magazine that forever changed the world of satire and humor, MAD will stop publishing all new content after issue #10 in October. The magazine will continue with classic reprint material and SOME new content under new cover art but will only be sold via the direct market and current subscriptions. News stand distribution will cease. Subscriptions are still being solicted and will continue with the new reprint/new stuff mix. DC will continue to publish books and… READ MORE

Workshop Warmups: Boris Johnson!

July 2nd, 2019 | Posted in General

I just go back from 13 days in Europe where I thought workshops in Amsterdam and Switzerland, enjoyed some between time in the former and sweated a lot. Here’s one of the warmup sketches the class and I did in Switzerland… UK politician Boris Johnson. READ MORE

Monday MADness: Charlottesville MAD Piece!

July 1st, 2019 | Posted in Monday MADness

Since my Sunday Mailbag yesterday dealt with doing political pieces, here a look at what was probably the most controversial politically-themed job I’ve done for MAD (and there have been a lot of them). I was working on the coloring of this job while on a plane from overseas back to the states, and The Lovely Anna leaned over to tell me I might want to turn off the layer with the sign lettering on it, just in case someone looked over and saw “JEWS WILL NOT REPLACE US” fulling my Wacom MobleStudio Pro screen. I’m not sure what would have been worse… getting confronted… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag: Political Work?

June 30th, 2019 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: I see you do little or no political cartoons or caricatures that depict political subjects or characters in funny or unpleasant themes. Do you avoid doing these or they are simply not in your interest to do it? What are the risks for doing and publishing such artworks? A: I guess you don’t read MAD. I definitely do not avoid it. I do plenty of political stuff, but I’m not an editorial cartoonist and not very interested in making it a focus of my work. Politically themed jobs are just jobs like any other jobs. The “risks” you mention are mainly just entering the… READ MORE
