Q: It seems you had a LOT OF fun with your latest parody “Mary Poopins” as there is in nearly every panel some (written) extra joke of yours. But why did you gave the painting of the Peacemakers a painterly look? It is quite a contrast to your normal drawings. Wouldn’t it be better to do also the painting in your normal style? And the drawing is in perspective. Did you draw it in perspective or did you draw it normal an paste it into the distorted frame later? A: Here’s the sequence in question: I used an image of the actual painting as the… READ MORE

I’m flying solo this year with The Lovely Anna back home watching the snow melt. Come see me in the Small Press area at table SP-35! I’ve got a handful of full sized MAD parody page originals along, which is a rare thing for these shows. READ MORE

I was flattered to be a guest on the “Chuck Load of Comics” podcast live from C2E2 along with the amazing Art Baltazar and Franco from Aw Yeah Comics. Here’s the video on YouTube: Thanks to the folks at Chuck Load of Comics for asking me to be a guest! Great podcast, BTW. Subscribe if you like it. READ MORE

I did this cover for the short lived but beloved publication Stay Tooned! This was a wonderful quarterly magazine by editor John Read but only made it for (I believe) 6 issues. READ MORE

Thanks to a last second quick turnaround job I don’t have time for an actual SotW this week, so here’s the one commission from C2E2 I took a picture of. I was so swamped with commission work I never took the time to snap any other pics last weekend. Anyway, this is Dick Van Dyke from the original “Mary Poppins”. Brush pens and Copic markers with a touch of colored pencil. READ MORE

Wait…WHAT? Another comic con?? That’s THREE WEEKENDS IN A ROW!! I know, it just happened that way this year. I also got lucky in that my last MAD deadline was the beginning of March and the next is not until the first week of May. This weekend March 29-31st I’ll be at Wondercon in sunny Anaheim, CA! You’ll find me not in Artist Alley but in the Small Press area at table SP-35. I’ll also be the patsy in the annual mega-popular “Quick Draw” event pitted against Quick Draw veterans Scott Shaw! and the legendary Sergio Aragonés and run by the very funny Mark Evanier, taking… READ MORE

I had a nice surprise this weekend at C2E2 when the great Svengoolie (aka Rich Koz) dropped by with his crew. He told me how much he loved his appearance in MAD #4. I told him when I am visited by stars I have drawn in MAD is am usually ducking punches rather than praise, so this was a nice change. We did a little segment which may of may not make an upcoming episode of the show… Sven even signed a copy of MAD #4 and one of the pages of original art I happened to have with me. Thanks Rich, Jim and the… READ MORE

Q: I was wondering if there is permission needed from Mad Magazine or the artist for people to use the picture of the character Alfred E. Neuman. A: If by “picture” you mean this picture: …or any other image of Alfred that was done for MAD then yes, unless you were using the image for something that would qualify as “fair use” you’d need permission in order not to be infringing on MAD/EC Comics and Warner Bros copyright. You’d have to ask MAD since asking original artist Norman Mingo would be tough, he’s been dead since 1980. Creating a new piece of art with your… READ MORE
