May 19th, 2016 | Posted in News

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the National Cartoonists Society are getting together in Memphis this month to raise money for their wonderful work. I’ve already blogged about the events taking place next Thursday (60 cartoonists will be visiting the hospital and drawing for patients and their families in the afternoon and having a special dinner on Beale St. that night where they also will be drawing cartoons to be sold in the St. Jude gift shop, and an evening fundraiser with a smaller group of cartoonists with a show and live auction will take place). Another part of this endeavor is an online auction… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Monday Edition: Inspirations?

May 16th, 2016 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: How did you get into art and decide to make a career out of it? Who were your inspirations? A: I can quite honestly day that I’ve never wanted to be anything but an artist. My very earliest memories regarding what I loved to do and what I wanted to be when I “grew up” (still waiting for that to happen) are of me, stacks of paper and drawing implements. If I had to pick something that was a catalyst for that lifelong desire to be an artist, it would probably be Batman. I was born in 1966, and the Batman TV show was… READ MORE

Later this month the National Cartoonists Society will be having their annual Reuben Awards Weekend in Memphis, and there will be a very special event taking place on Thursday the 26th. The NCS Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be hosting a fundraiser and auction that evening to benefit St. Jude and the incredible work they do, which will feature over 20 big name cartoonists (and me). Here’s some of the details from the NCS website: As we head into Memphis this Memorial Day Weekend to attend the 70th annual NCS Reuben Awards, members… READ MORE

Tales From the Theme Park #14

Getting new, fresh samples on the walls of my theme park operations was always a challenge… especially since I spent most of my free time doing freelance work. So, since much of my freelancing had to do with caricature, I would often convert the caricatures I did for various jobs into samples for the parks. This sample of comedian Tom Green from 2002 is an example: I had originally done that caricature for a job for MAD (#406, June 2001): This led to the following exchange with a 10 year old kid out at the park: Kid (looking at the sample on the wall): That’s… READ MORE

I did this illustration that is the the May issue of Sports Illustrated Kids. It illustrates some of the funniest (and oddest) sports injuries ever. For example, the Baltimore Orioles’ Marty Cordova once fell asleep in a tanning bed and sunburned his face so badly he missed playing time. READ MORE
