This piece was done in 1995 for Twin Cities Business Monthly, and accompanied a story about insurance fraud. The client wanted a 50’s comic book feel to it, so I naturally went with an E.C. look…especially given the title they wanted for the comic. This was done using the old “film pos/acetate overlay” technique that was used for coloring comic books for decades before the digital revolution. It involved taking the inks to a production house that put it on a stat camera and produced two prints of it on clear acetate. Believe it or not the iPad version of MAD #535 is already out. Above is Mark Fredrickson‘s terrific cover art. This cover got a big laugh at the MAD panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where they showed it for the audience. Speaking of San Diego Comic-Con, when I was there last month I did a couple of live demos over at the Wacom booth on their fancy new 27QHD Touch. Q: I’d like to know how you manage to resist the temptation to add ‘just a bit more’ to an artwork you’ve just done. I have to admit I’ve given in to that a few times and a drawing can get ruined as a consequence. A: That’s a problem for many artists, especially younger ones.
