I got back late last night after a LOOOOONG drive from San Diego to Minnesota (9 states, 2000 miles, lots of regrettable choices at fast food restaurants), to find my iMac was dead… logic board fried. Never fun. Actually it started having problems just a few hours before I left for San Diego Comic Con when it started rebooting in a perpetual loop, but the techies at the Apple Store declared it dead officially today. I’m sitting in my hotel room in San Diego packing up and getting ready to drive… yes DRIVE… back to Minnesota tomorrow with Number One Son Thomas. We had to stay and extra night because I had a job for the next issue of MAD due today and pulled an all-nighter to wrap it up by about 3 pm San Diego time. Here’s Tom Welling from the moment he finally appeared onscreen as Superman, after a mere decade of beating around the bush on “Smallville”. The reason Welling appears after Brandon Routh in the lineup, and is wearing the year “2011” instead of 2001 when “Smallville” debuted, is because of my rules of inclusion in the print. I am caricaturing the actors as they looked when the portrayed Superman proper, in TV or film, and with the requisite year of that appearance. Superman as played by Brandon Routh in 2006’s “Superman Returns”. I did the parody of this film for MAD, and used the “censored” gag in there as well. It refers to an internet rumor that the filmmakers had to digitally edit many of the scenes in the movie to reduce Routh’s “package”, which was supposedly distracting. According to this article, that is an urban myth that is not true. Still funny, though. READ MORE
