Men of Steel- Christopher Reeve!

July 4th, 2015 | Posted in General

It’s probably fitting that my posting of Christopher Reeve‘s Superman falls on the Fourth of July… his version of the character was the most iconic and All-Amercian there has ever been, IMO. This is the fourth of eight “Supermen” from my upcoming limited edition print “Men of Steel”, debuting Wednesday at San Diego Comic-Con and onsale in the Studio Store shortly thereafter! READ MORE

Men of Steel- David Wilson!

July 3rd, 2015 | Posted in General

Superman number three from my upcoming “Men of Steel” limited edition print: David Wilson. This is the one most people will react to with a “who?”, but Wilson’s Superman fits my criteria of inclusion: portrayed a live-action Superman proper on television or film. This was from a 1975 ABC special that was a shortened, edited version of the 1966 Broadway musical “It’s a Bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman”. Bob Holiday was most famous for portraying Superman in the original Broadway show (which ran for 129 performances), but as that was not ever officially on TV or film, that doesn’t fit my criteria. Men of Steel- George Reeves!

July 2nd, 2015 | Posted in General

Here’s the second of my “Men of Steel” caricatures- George Reeves. As I mentioned yesterday, my rules here include caricaturing the actor as they looked onscreen as Superman when they first appeared as the character, including the year on the chest. Reeves’ first appearance was in the 1951 theatrical film “Superman and the Mole Men”, which served as a “pilot” of sorts for the television series “The Adventures of Superman” (1952-1958), which also starred Reeves. Although the later seasons of the TV show where filmed in color, they did not appear in color to the public until the show was in syndication in 1965. Thus,… READ MORE

Men of Steel- Kirk Alyn!

July 1st, 2015 | Posted in General

Here’s the first of the final caricatures for my new Limited Edition print “Men of Steel”… Kirk Alyn. As with my other prints, the concept is a look at the different actors who have played a single, fictional character on television or film. So far I’ve done James Bond, Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and Batman. New for 2015: a look at the actors who have portrayed Superman. My rules for inclusion: First, they have to have appeared on screen in TV or film as the character in a production that centers on the character. That precludes advertising, odd cameos, live stage shows/World’s Fair appearances, or… READ MORE

San Diego Comic Con 2015!

June 30th, 2015 | Posted in General

Hard to believe that San Diego Comic-Con starts one week from tomorrow! I’m already gearing up for the event. This year will be very different for me, as I will have my own booth! My booth number is I-02, which is located back to back with the great Sergio Aragonés, so it will be a very MAD place to be. Since I have my own space, I will not be at the NCS booth at all this year. In fact, I’ll only be away from my location a couple of times: On Thursday night I’ll be on the annual MAD about MAD panel with Sergio,… READ MORE

This is the closest I’ve gotten to doing an actual MAD cover… the cover of a special Superman issue from 2013. Here are the roughs and some close ups of the city painting that took forever. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Digital Sketches?

June 28th, 2015 | Posted in General

Q: Recently you changed your working process and now you are doing your pencil sketches for mad parodies just digitally. Is this now your favorit method for all sketches? And I think your inks are still real inks. Do you print out your digital sketches and ink over them? Can you give some details and pros and cons of your new working process? A: To be honest I have not completely switched to digital pencil roughs for everything I do. In fact I sort of go back and forth these days between preferring doing comps and roughs digitally and doing them on paper with real… READ MORE
