June 17th, 2015 | Posted in Classic Rock Sketch Series

I’m finally getting back to my “Classic Rock and Roll” caricature sketch series. Here’s the fetching Deborah Harry from “Blondie”. My friends and I were all in love with Deborah thanks to Blondie’s MTV music videos. Did you know they used to play music videos on MTV? Well, they did. You can buy the original sketch in the Studio Store! READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- MAD Owns What?

June 14th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: In regards to recurring characters like Spy vs Spy, Melvin and Jenkins, and Monroe etc does MAD own the rights to those characters (I’m assuming they DO own Spy vs Spy) or does the original artist/ writer still own them? A: I am not the best person to ask that question of, since I have nothing to do with the inner working of the magazine or its relationship with freelancers. That said, as far as I know EVERYTHING that is published in MAD Magazine is done as “work for hire”, which means that MAD owns it once they pay you for doing it. That… READ MORE

Website 3.0!

June 13th, 2015 | Posted in News

The new website is finally up and running (sort of)! There are a number of things that need fixing, and the Studio Store is completely offline for the moment, but the new design and layout is in place and running smoothly (more or less). So what’s new? Well, this is a much sleeker and less cluttered website, and infinitely more mobile-friendly. It changes dynamically with the device you are using, so on a smartphone you have a different layout and drop down menu functions than you have on a tablet or a desktop. Overall the site should load and run much faster, and be a… READ MORE

Monday MADness- My Test Assignment!

June 8th, 2015 | Posted in Monday MADness

I know I’ve told this story before, but if someone was to ask me “what was the first piece you ever did for MAD?”, there are actually three answers. The first piece of art I ever had printed in MAD was a two pager called “Gadgets to Make Your Home Theater REALLY like the Movies” in MAD #399, October 2000. The first piece of art I ever did for them that they used for any reason was something called “Presidential Survivor”, and was used on the MAD website (back when they were first doing original content on it) in August 2000. My first official paid… READ MORE
