Sunday Mailbag- Favorite/Least Favorite Spoofs?

June 7th, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: What’s your favorite and least favorite movie and/or tv show you’ve drawn a spoof of? A: I have to separate those into the two categories, TV shows and films, for a complete answer. One caveat: my choices would not necessarily reflect how I felt about my work on the spoofs in question… what I would consider my best work might not (in fact does not) coincide with what I consider my favorite and least favorite shows and film I’ve drawn the satires for. Mostly my choices are based on a balance between how much fun I had doing the job, how much I either… READ MORE

Ich bin in Deutschland Ausgeraubt

June 5th, 2015 | Posted in General

Wow, two blog posts headlines in German in a row? The reason behind this one is not as pleasant as yesterdays. Right now The Munich Comic Festival is going on in, you guessed it, Munich, Germany. This year they are giving their lifetime achievement award, called the “Peng!” to MAD artist Tom Bunk… a very deserving and fantastic cartoonist. The frestival is the second largest of its kind in Germany, and boasts a lot of publishers in a huge book fair, professional comics artists doing workshops and signing autographs/sketching, and various presentations and lectures on the artform and the industry. Sounds like a great event.… READ MORE

Ich bin ein MAD Leser? Not in Australia…

June 4th, 2015 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Number One Son Tom recently returned from a three week college choir tour of Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and he brought me home this issue of the German MAD magazine! MAD still has a few foreign language editions out there (though not as many as they used to have), and the German MAD is one of them. The way these work is the foreign edition licenses the MAD name and format, and gets a certain amount of content from the U.S. version of the magazine. They translate that into their language and then fill the rest of the issue with MAD-flavored work but… READ MORE

Presidential Caricatures #24- Grover Cleveland!

June 3rd, 2015 | Posted in Presidential Caricatures

Since I am doing a poster of all my presidential caricatures, I had to do a real one of Grover Cleveland for his second, but non-consecutive, term. So, here is the real final caricature of this series… at least until 2016. READ MORE

What, Me Wanna Banana?

Sneak peek of what I assume is a Mark Fredrickson cover for the next issue of MAD, due out later this month. I did the art on the parody of the Showtime series “Ray Donovan”. More when allowed… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Mort’s Medal!

June 1st, 2015 | Posted in Monday MADness

Possibly the biggest highlight of a weekend full of highlights at the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Awards last week in D.C. was the bestowing of the NCS Medal of Honor to the incomparable Mort Drucker. Mort was the very first recipient of what is sure to become one of the most prestigious lifetime achievement awards in all of cartooning. Here’s the story: I just finished serving two terms (four years) as president of the NCS. Since I took office I have had multiple people come to me and ask why (insert name of legendary cartoonist) had not been honored with the NCS Milton Caniff Lifetime… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- Digital Coloring?

May 31st, 2015 | Posted in Mailbag

Q: Two questions about digital coloring: 1) I realize that probably 99% of your coloring work is digital, but when you do go old fashioned do you exclusively use watercolor? Or do you use other mediums as well to get the effect you want? 2) Do you see a trend in the marketplace where clients are preferring to see work done either completely digital or at least colored digitally? Or is there still a demand for more traditional mediums such as watercolor? I’m asking because I can’t think of the last time I saw an actual feature cartoon that had that traditional look, it’s all… READ MORE

Let Them Eat Cake…

May 29th, 2015 | Posted in General

One of the highlights of the NCS Reuben Weekend was the cake we had made as part of the King Features 100th Anniversary celebration last Friday. Fans of the Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” show know Duff Goldman and his team of pastry artists at Charm City Cakes. Since the 2015 Reuben Awards Weekend was in nearby Washington D.C., we decided to pay Charm City Cakes a visit in Baltimore with an eye on having a cake made honoring King Feature’s Centennial. What you see is what they came up with. Here’s my original design: It was an adventure in more ways than one. First,… READ MORE
