Back on the last weekend of February I was sitting at my artist’s alley table at C2E2 in Chicago, listening to people discuss this new virus that was raging through China and speculating if it would affect us in any way here in the US. Oh, what innocent little lambs we were. Little did I know that was the last time I’d be at a comic con, or any other gathering of more than about 20 people, for the rest of 2020. We take so many things for granted in life, and it isn’t until we lose something that we realize it. With the advent… READ MORE

Here’s my Clint Eastwood as “William Munny” from the oscar winning movie “Unforgiven”. This is another example of the kind of sketches I’ll be doing in copies of CLAPTRAP for all “Schmendrick” or higher backers. You get to choose the movie the character I draw comes from (I choose the subject)! There was a limit of 100 of these, and there are only two left! Grab one while you can. Or you can just buy this original. READ MORE

One of the best things about being a backer of Desmond Devlin and my upcoming book of MAD-style movie parodies was that those at a certain perk level and above got to nominate and vote to chose three of the twelve movies we will be spoofing in CLAPTRAP. Well, the votes have been counted and the winners announced today! Joining the previously announced eight films to be ridiculed by Des and I will be: The Blues Brothers The Princess Bride Citizen Kane Those are some stellar choices! Well done, backers! Remember in order to by considered nominated movies had to be major release films that… READ MORE

Each Monday I’m doing an installment of a complete, chronological look at every job I did for MAD over my 20 year run for the magazine, complete with whatever stories, anecdotes, or milestones, might apply along with the full article. My next job for MAD was a seven pager called “MAD‘s 50 Worst Things About Sports” written by my CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin for MAD #408, Aug 2001. This piece was my longest so far for the magazine, and the second that was considered the “lead” feature… meaning the cover was a tease for this particular article. Of course I did not know that at… READ MORE

I haven’t been participating much lately, but “The Daily Coronacature” I started back in march is still going under the auspices of Dave Snyder on Facebook and IGG. Today’s subject is rocker Dave Navarro. Back in the 2010’s I illustrated a sex advice column he wrote for Penthouse (well, it was half actual advice and half tongue-in-cheek humor). Here’s a gallery of some of the ones I did for that column in Penthouse. The “themes” of each illustration related to some subject Dave was talking about in his column. READ MORE

Q: After 55 years of experience reading MAD movie & TV spoofs, I have an ability to pinpoint pieces as a Mort Drucker, Joe Orlando, Angelo Torres, Sam Viviano, or Tom Richmond – but only by analyzing a given piece “as a whole”. Whereas, to a casual reader, that ability might be limited to picking out Don Martin by a drawn head, or an Antonio Prohias nose, or an Al Jaffee leap in the air. Is there anything specific about your illustration style that YOU might consider as reasonably-recognizable clues that a given piece has been drawn by Tom Richmond? A: That’s a good question. It… READ MORE
