Caricature Sample

I drew caricatures all day Sunday at Valleyfair, and was hoping to get a few new samples done for the display there. Each year I try to get a few new ones done, as there are a lot of repeat customers each year and having the same samples up all the time is boring. New samples make the booth fresher and we can get some timely ones up as well. Timely is good, but I personally like to draw celebrities that aren’t a “flash in the pan” nor ones tied to a current role that might end up being obsolete in a year or so. Iconic or long term popularity makes for better samples.

The samples are meant to represent how the live work turns out. As such, I try and do them in a reasonable time frame and keep the lines and paintings loose. I don’t use frisket film or any kind of masking except a piece of scrap paper for the occasional sharp edge. I did use a white colored pencil for a few touches here and there. I do allow a few elaborate samples in each booth just for the entertainment value for the customers, but most are simple head and shoulders or quick bodies with some kind of gag.

I was hoping to get that Harry Potter sample done but we were just too busy. I did get this one of Snoop Dogg done based on a sketch I did a few months ago.
