This is one subject that is long overdue to be added to my “Classic Rock Stars” caricature sketch series, the great Carlos Santana! He’s been one of the greatest guitarists in rock for a long time, really ever since his band’s explosive performance at Woodstock, which took place when they were basically unknown in the U.S. and their debut album still unreleased. The band’s set was such a revelation that they were included in the Woodstock film and soundtrack album despite their unknown status amid a lineup of superstar headliners. Santana is regularly mentioned in any list of the world’s greatest guitarists. A true original. READ MORE

“Welcome to the Sketchbook, we got fun and games!” This week’s sketch subject is “Guns’n’Roses” frontman Axl Rose! “Appetite for Destruction” was released right in the middle of my time in art college, and got played relentlessly during a lot of all nighters when I was trying to wrap up school projects. I never did see them live though. READ MORE

I’ve done a few caricatures of Prince but I haven’t drawn him in his 80’s “Purple Rain” era look since, well, the 80’s. I was reminded of the time I “sort of” met him the other night and that inspired me to make him this week’s subject and to tell that story. Everyone who has lived in the Twin Cities long enough probably has a Prince story. He wasn’t exactly a hermit but you probably would not run into him at Wal-Mart, either. Still, if you frequented any clubs with live music you’d have a good chance of spotting him every once and awhile. Back in the… READ MORE

This week’s subject is recently deceased rock star Michael Lee Aday AKA Meat Loaf. Meat Loaf wasn’t just known for his music and acting… he’ll also go down in history for recording one of the longest and most overperformed karaoke songs of all time, “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”! Speaking of that song, I didn’t know until recently that the famous live video performance that was so ubiquitous on MTV back when MTV actually played music videos did not feature the woman who dueted with Meat Loaf on that song on the album “Bat Out of Hell”. That original performer was Ellen Foley. Foley was unable to tour… READ MORE

This week’s sketch is musician, composer, songwriter and actor Tom Waits. Oh sure, he’s a multiple Grammy winner, was named one of Rolling Stone’s “Top 100 Songwriters of All Time” and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame… but to me he’ll always be the bug-eating R. M. Renfield in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”! READ MORE
