From the Freelance Files

February 8th, 2010 | Posted in Freelancing

Every once and awhile I will pull out some artwork from an old job that might have been interesting to share what it was about. Yesterday I cleaned out a storage room in our house and ran across a pile of old art that I had done for a series of CD-ROM games back in the late 1990’s. I’ve said many times you never know where your work might end up being used, and sometimes the most unlikely of projects will come your way when you freelance. If someone had said to me that I’d be “illustrating” a series of CD-ROM games I would have… READ MORE

Superbowl Spots

Here is a series of spot illustrations I did a few months ago for Penthouse for their February issue. They are illustrating a “timeline” feature similar to the one I did for St. Patrick’s Day about a year ago. This timeline follows a typical guy’s day on Superbowl Sunday. Here are a few of them, pencil roughs and finals: Breakfast of Champions: hot wings Checking out the neighbor’s hot wife! She is… OOOH! NACHOS! Getting pissed at the hipsters The inevitable end of the evening I did a few extra sketches and the editors chose the six they liked the best (only four pictured, you’ll… READ MORE

A Less Successful 3D Project

December 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Freelancing

I had a few people ask me about what I termed the “Donovan McNabb Disaster” when I blogged about the release of the Obama bobblehead I designed for a documentary film promo. What I was referring too was a project I did many years ago similar to the recent Obama bobblehead, but that did not turn out so well. The client was a private entrepreneur who was trying to develop a business making sports team giveaway items… you know the sort of stuff that pro teams give away to the first 10,00 people through the gates at a given game. These folks were from Philadelphia,… READ MORE

Obobblehead

December 21st, 2009 | Posted in Freelancing

I think I might be getting typecast with this bobblehead thing. First there was the iPhone App with the virtual caricature bobbleheads I did of all the members of the U.S. Congress. Now I’m starting to do actual bobblehead dolls. Here is another of those weird little jobs that come along for a freelance illustrator that are pretty cool when they actually are followed through with. I’ve designed some 3D caricatures for merchandise before, but other than a prototype Donovan McNabb/ Philadelphia Eagles mug that didn’t end up much resembling the artwork I did this is the first one that actually got manufactured. The same… READ MORE

The Great Greeting Card Experiment

December 14th, 2009 | Posted in Freelancing

Here’s an interesting example of some of the strange jobs that come your way when you are a freelance illustrator. I have never given a thought to doing greeting cards. They are an art form unto themselves, blending art, writing, humor and context to make cards that resonate with buyers. Cartoonists like Sandra Boynton and Oliver Christianson (aka “Revilo”) are amazing talents. It’s one of those areas of cartooning I didn’t think my skills lent themselves to. My friend and fellow member of the “Usual Gang of Idiots” John Kovaleski disagreed. He was (at the time) working as a creative director at Marian Heath Greeting… READ MORE

The Dreaded Deadline Demon

This is beginning to become a Monday ritual. It’s 1:20 a.m. and I’m still up working on a job due tomorrow. Sleep is overrated. READ MORE

Another Penthouse Illustration

October 12th, 2009 | Posted in Freelancing

Click image for a closer look… The October issue of Penthouse should have the above spot illustration of mine in it somewhere. It’s just a silly little cartoon that is accompanies a short Halloween article about the scariest thing a college student still living at home can experience. This job was one that somewhat approaches the line for me when considering work for a publication like Penthouse. I’ve done a few illustrations for them now and made it plain to the art director on the outset that I would not do any overtly pornographic images. I’m no prude and have zero problems with that type… READ MORE

Star Tribune Illustrations

September 11th, 2009 | Posted in Freelancing

Today’s Minneapolis Star Tribune has a special pull-out section entitled “2009 Vikings Season Preview” that features two full page illustrations I did of Brett Favre and company. One is on the front of the section and one on the back, each is meant as a “cover” but obviously with different possible messages. The job was to illustrate two extreme scenarios of the outcome of the “Brett Favre” experiment at quarterback. They wanted not only to convey Favre as a savior in one and as a failure in the other, but also to show how you can flip the section over to see the opposite possibility.… READ MORE
