June 29th, 2017 | Posted in General

Photo by Greg Feinberg   If anyone out there is on the fence about taking my final 2017 caricature workshop on Sept 15-17th here in Eagan, MN, don’t delay much longer. I’m giving it until July 12th to reach my minimum of eight students and if I am short I’m afraid I’ll have to cancel the workshop. Read HERE about what these workshops are all about, and register for the September workshop HERE. READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- When Did You Start Drawing?

June 25th, 2017 | Posted in General

Q: What age did you start drawing caricatures? A: I’ve been drawing caricatures all my life, since I was a little kid, I just didn’t know what I was drawing were caricatures. I thought they were just funny drawings of people. It wasn’t until later in life I associated what I was doing with the term “caricature”. When I was in high school I drew a series of comics called “Baby Bill”, which were satirical “adventures” of me and my high school buddies but as babies. These are long lost but thinking back I did infant-version cartoon caricatures of all of us. We were babies… READ MORE

Joel Schumacher Says He’s Sorry

June 15th, 2017 | Posted in General

From “Battyman Begone” MAD #455, July 2005- Words by Des Devlin In a recent article with VICE, director Joel Schumacher apologized to all fans of Batman for his film “Batman and Robin”. Not only was that film totally unwatchable, it killed a movie franchise that didn’t get rebooted until “Batman Begins” eight years later. As a lifelong fan of Batman, I still am scratching my head over “Batman and Robin”. You would think that someone involved in the production would have looked over the dialogue in the script, watched the dailies while the actors chewed the scenery to shreds with their over the top and… READ MORE

June 12th, 2017 | Posted in General

I was teaching a workshop in Pittsburgh this weekend when the news of Adam West‘s sudden passing broke. It is no exaggeration to say that his 60’s TV show “Batman” was what got me hooked on comics as a very young kid, and probably is the reason I am a cartoonist today. After many years of disdain heaped on the campy nature of that show by “real” Batman fans it was great to see it embraced by so many in the last few years as the nostalgia factor finally kicked into high gear. That show was a wonderful and beloved take on a character that… READ MORE

Memorial Day

May 29th, 2017 | Posted in General

In honor of those who have fallen in defense of our country and our freedoms, here’s a link to my recap of the first “downrange” USO trip of National Cartoonist Society cartoonists since the Vietnam War. I was lucky to be part of a group that included Jeff Bacon, Chip Bok, Bruce Higdon, Jeff Keane, Rick Kirkman, Stephan Pastis, Mike Peters, Michael Ramirez, and Garry Trudeau. Proud to have been part of that team, which traveled to draw for wounded warriors in Germany and then on to Iraq to draw for troops deployed in the war zone. Remember our fallen heroes today… and every day. READ MORE
