Walking about London I still see quite few t-shirts and memorabilia for sale of the late Amy Winehouse. They reminded me of the time around 2008 or so that a fellow caricaturist here in the UK emailed me these pictures from British weekly gossip magazine Heat: Yes, that’s my caricature of Amy Winehouse taken directly from this blog the fan in the article is trying to get her to sign. In keeping with a longstanding and annoying tradition, I’m squeezing in a little work while on my trip to London and India. Nothing too taxing, just inking some illustrations for the as-yet-unannounced second MAD spoof of a classic children’s book. Don’t worry, I’ve been having plenty of fun. Sorry for the lack of posts this past week. Staring Sunday there will be more activity here. The Lovely Anna and I are embarking on a loooong trip overseas today. First stop London UK for a week of actual, real live vacation followed by a weekend caricature workshop there. Then its off to New Delhi, India for my appearance at the Delhi Comic Con. We don’t get back home until almost mid-December. Last weekend I was in Dallas TX hanging out with a bunch of fellow members of the Usual Gang of Idiots at the 3rd annual “MAD About Dallas” show. The very talented lineup was David DeGrand, Kit Lively, Scott Nickel, and the incomparable Tom Bunk. I’d met Tom a few times at various MAD events, but never got a chance to spend any time with him. I’ve been a fan for a very long time, going back to his “Wacky Packages” and “Garbage Pail Kids” days. His work for MAD is ridiculously entertaining. The incomparable Sergio Aragonés regularly creates masterpieces, but a couple of years ago he did a piece for a MAD book that is a true work of genius, even by his standards. In the book Inside MAD, Sergio created a fold out spread that depicted virtually every major contributor to the magazine in it’s 60 plus years of publication. I’m not sure what the criteria was that determined if an artist/writer/editor was included, but I was grateful to be one of them. Above is a closeup of me by Sergio!
