Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Fun

May 30th, 2016 | Posted in General

The National Cartoonists Society‘s annual Reuben Awards Weekend took place this past weekend, this time in birthplace of Rock n’ Roll, Memphis, Tennessee. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 professional cartoonists attended where they could be found talking talks, drawing drawings and being honored with awards. This was the first time in four years I have attended a Reubens where I was not NCS president and running the show. It was very relaxing, not just because I didn’t have to plan and run the event, but because current NCS president Bill Morrison and his wife Kayre did a terrific job so we had no worries.… READ MORE

Hardline Stands against the Print Mongers?

May 24th, 2016 | Posted in General

I had to skip my appearance at Wizard World Minneapolis thanks to a last second job with an impossible deadline (that I still managed to meet), so I missed the fireworks there when artist Aldrin “Buzz” Aw confronted “fan art” artist Tim Lundmark (who goes by the name “The Random Artist”) who was selling prints that were obvious rip-off versions of other artist’s work. Nothing new there, you see that kind of thing so often at these shows. The difference here was that Buzz really went off in a profanity-laden way on Lundmark, and Lundmark ended up packing up and leaving. That was on his… READ MORE

May 13th, 2016 | Posted in General

Later this month the National Cartoonists Society will be having their annual Reuben Awards Weekend in Memphis, and there will be a very special event taking place on Thursday the 26th. The NCS Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be hosting a fundraiser and auction that evening to benefit St. Jude and the incredible work they do, which will feature over 20 big name cartoonists (and me). I did the art for the above promotional poster. Here’s some of the details from the NCS website: As we head into Memphis this Memorial Day Weekend to attend the 70th annual NCS Reuben Awards, members… READ MORE

MAD about Prince

April 28th, 2016 | Posted in General

When the news broke about Prince’s death I immediately tried to think back to when I might have drawn him for a job so I could post that image along with my Prince story. I drew a blank (pun intended). I could not come up with a single time I had drawn Prince in any job, parody or image for MAD or otherwise. I remembered I used to have a sample of him up in my theme park locations, but that one is lost to the ages. No scans or record of it, and it sucked anyway. Leave it up to the experts in the… READ MORE

My Prince Story

Official news outlets are reporting that music superstar Prince died today at age 57. Having moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in 1985 for college, I was here right when the Prince “Purple Rain” rocket was going full blast and he was literally the biggest name in music. Rumors abounded at the time that, despite being a very young mid-twenties, he had already written and recorded enough music stashed in his “vault” that he could release albums regularly for the rest of his life and not have to write another song. He played every instrument and created a sound that was a huge influence on… READ MORE

Sunday Mailbag- First MAD Cover?

April 10th, 2016 | Posted in General

Q: Congrats on doing your first cover for MAD, but my initial reaction to seeing your post was “this was his FIRST cover???” Why did it take so long for you to get a cover? A: MAD has always tended to use different illustrators for the covers than they do interiors. Norman Mingo, Richard Williams, Kelly Freas, and a host of others, most recently Mark Fredrickson, have done basically nothing but cover art… but a lot of it. Mort Drucker and Jack Rickard are the only two regulars from the interior of the magazine that have done 30 or more covers, and their styles were… READ MORE
