Sketch o’the Week: Darren McGavin!

November 2nd, 2022 | Posted in General

Talk about killing two werewolves with one silver bullet! Our “Sketch o’the Week” both continues our series of classic TV detectives (or investigative reporters) AND fits a halloween theme! Darren McGavin‘s “Kolchak” chased down all manner of supernatural creatures in his short lived but much beloved TV movies/series “The Night Stalker”. “X-Files” creator Chris Carter cited Kolchak as a “tremendous influence” on his show. “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” has become a cult classic in syndication. MADness #86: Harry Potter 7!

October 31st, 2022 | Posted in General

Since witches and wizards are out tonight, it’s perfect timing to share this parody of the last of the Harry Potter movie spoofs to appear in MAD. This parody of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” appeared in MAD #507, February 2011, and was written by Desmond Devlin. MAD did parodies of all eight Harry Potter films, including the final “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2”. All were written by Desmond. Mort Drucker did the art on the first spoof “Harry Plodder and the Sorry-Ass Story” in black and white back in MAD #412, Dec. 2001. I did the art for… READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week: Chrissie Hynde!

September 14th, 2022 | Posted in General

Don’t Get Me Wrong, our sketch subject has been the Talk of the Town for over 40 years as one of the original female stars of the punk rock scene. Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders also managed to bridge the gap between the club based pure punk world, new wave, and the commercial success of radio, with several big hits in the late 70’s and 80’s. She turned 71 last week! READ MORE

Happy 85th Birthday Sergio!

September 6th, 2022 | Posted in General

The pages of MAD Magazine has been graced by the work of some of the greatest cartoonists in the history of the medium… and that is not hyperbole. Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Harvey Kurtzman, Al Jaffee, Will Elder, Mort Drucker, Paul Coker, Antonio Prohias, Don Martin… the list keeps going. Perhaps the greatest pure cartoonist of them all turns 85 today! The incomparable Sergio Aragonés started with MAD in 1963 at age 26. He would go on to become one of the most prolific members of the Usual Gang of Idiots (second only to Jaffee, actually), appearing in (as of this writing) 501 issues (there… READ MORE

CLAPTRAP Sneak Peeks!

July 26th, 2022 | Posted in General

I’m trying to catch up after San Diego Comic Con last week, so in lieu of a MADness of the week here’s a look at some panels from Desmond Devlin and my upcoming book of all new movie parodies, CLAPTRAP. If you are already a backer, you’ll have seen these on a recent update, but I thought I’d share them here. See if you can identify the movies they are spoofing… none of which were ever spoofed in MAD. We are going to be about a year late delivering the book, but in our defense we are doing two parodies more than we originally planned,… READ MORE

MAD About Podcasting!

June 22nd, 2022 | Posted in General

No “Sketch o’the Week” this week because I am on a for real, actual vacation! However I am a guest this week on the “3 Point Perspective” podcast with illustrators Jake Parker and Will Terry this week. It’s a very different kind of discussion because they were most interested in the world of live caricature, so we talk a lot about that and only touch on MAD and other aspects of caricature illustration. The link will take you to a landing page with access to the YouTube or audio only versions of the podcast. Thanks Jake and Will for having me on the show! READ MORE

Remembering Memorial Day

May 30th, 2022 | Posted in General

Here in the U.S. Memorial Day is a lot of things… the unofficial start of summer, part of a three day weekend, a day many people spend on the lake, at the beach, or in the backyard cooking up hotdogs and hamburgers, eating potato salad, and spending time with loved ones. All those things are excellent ways to celebrate the day, but the real reason for the day is to remember all the soldiers who have died in the service of our country. Enjoy the sunshine, the brats and beer, and the company of family and friends, but take a moment to pay your respects… READ MORE
