I did this piece for Airbrush Action magazine sometime in 1999. It was a step by step on creating an airbrushed caricature illustration, using newly elected Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura as the subject. READ MORE

These illustrations were for a novelty product that (I think) never got produced. It was called “Trunks and Asses” and the idea was that these were supposed to be part of a label that would wrap around a tin can, one for republicans and one for democrats. The two different cans were going to be called something like “Democratic Party Promises” and “Republican Party Promises”… the gag being the cans were empty. I’m not sure what happened to the product, but it’s not usual to do packaging or product illustration all the way to final and have it end up never seeing the light of… READ MORE

Well, not really an illustration. This is a theme park sample from 1992 of Dana Carvey as “The Church Lady” from his serial SNL skit. This original had been missing for years and was found this spring behind another sample in an old frame at my Minnesota park operation. Gotta love the lumpy body. When I drew this sample I was 26 years old, had been doing “Married…with Children” for NOW Comics for about 2 years, had been doing live caricatures for about 7 years and had just started doing freelance illustration for a few clients. With the news earlier this year that Penthouse is ceasing their print magazine, I thought I’d post some of the illustrations I’ve done for them over the years. Some time ago I did a post showing many of the Dave Navarro spot illustrations I did for his monthly column, you can see those here. This was my first job for them, a “timeline” of a typical office guy’s St. Patrick’s Day: READ MORE

With the New York primary coming up Tuesday, here’s a look back at my 1999 parody of 1998’s “Godzilla” for Cracked magazine, complete with a recognizable cameo at the end: Incidentally the original title of that parody was “God-Awful”, which makes more sense with the intro copy. However I actually only did the first 4 pages as a sample to show MAD, and they were not impressed. When I then showed it to Cracked they wanted to print it, so I had to finish it up. I came up with the Hillary Clinton joke and changed the title to “God-Hilla”. READ MORE

I used to do fairly regular work for National Geographic Kids magazine (later National Geographic World), mainly spot illustrations but occasionally half or full pages as well. They were an interesting client to work for because they were real sticklers for historical and scientific accuracy when it came to the artwork. I would be given very specific references for things like the type of clothes or accessories someone from a certain place or time would be wearing. I’m not sure when I stopped getting calls from them but I have not done anything for National Geographic World for a few years now. This 2004 piece… READ MORE

For a couple of years I did regular illustrations for Penthouse that were used for a column written by rocker Dave Navarro. The column was a tongue-in-cheek sex advice sort of thing… mostly for humorous effect. The column stopped printing late last year. Here’s a look at all of the Dave Navarro art I did for them: READ MORE

This was for the cover of a CD (that was this shiny plastic disk that contained music and audio on it. You would put in into something called a “CD Player” and…uh… nevermind) that was a collection of radio show antics by a couple of DJs named C.J. Goodearl and Dave Green. “Moe Fugger Malt Liquor” was a fictional product they did spoof ads for, among their other bits. Anyway this was their second CD, circa 2002. READ MORE
