This was supposed to be the cover of a book about internet gambling. I did the art in December of 2000, and as far as I know it was never used. I’m not sure the author ever found a publisher for the book at all. A lot of book deals go down like that. An author wants to make a “pitch” to various publishers either with the concept and outline or a finished manuscript, and feels like the need a visual to go along with the pitch. I never work on spec, so I expect to be paid for the art whether the book sees… READ MORE

This spot illustration is from the April 1998 issue of Golden State Warriors Magazine. It was for a kids page section and depicts then rookie player Adonal Foyle. This is a very early example of my fledgling digital illustration style. READ MORE

Hoo boy, this is humbling. I came across this moldie oldie going through some of my mom’s old storage boxes. This was a tri-fold promo brochure I did as a project back in my last year of college, circa 1989. I updated it with my new address after my new bride The Lovely Anna and I moved to the Atlanta Georgia area to run a theme park caricature operation for Fasen Arts that summer… thus the Austell GA address. Here’s the back: I remember this as being the first piece of art I ever inked with real ink, as opposed to markers or pens. I… READ MORE

Back in the late 1990’s/early 2000’s I did several illustrations for a radio syndicate called U.S. Radio Stations used in ads for their stations and packages. Some were for certain themed stations and some for specific hosts and their shows. Here are a few: READ MORE

From the mid to late 90’s I did a fair amount of work for a publishing company out in the San Fransisco area that produced magazines for the local pro sports teams, including the San Fransisco Giants baseball team. I did quite a few spot illustrations to accompany short articles. Here’s a few done in traditional media from 1995 to 1999 or so. There are a few caricatures but mostly just generic ballplayers. I believe that’s Mike Piazza and Barry Bonds first and third from the left… READ MORE

This piece was done in 1995 for Twin Cities Business Monthly, and accompanied a story about insurance fraud. The client wanted a 50’s comic book feel to it, so I naturally went with an E.C. look…especially given the title they wanted for the comic. This was done using the old “film pos/acetate overlay” technique that was used for coloring comic books for decades before the digital revolution. It involved taking the inks to a production house that put it on a stat camera and produced two prints of it on clear acetate. One was just the linework on the clear sheet, but adding registration marks… READ MORE

The cover of Broadcasting and Cable magazine, Aug 1999. Airbrush and watercolor for a cover story on new syndicated talk shows. Depicted left to right: Martin Short, Richard Simmons, Tia Carrere, Louie Anderson, ??? and Queen Latifah. I have no clue who the blonde lady is with the microphone raised up in the center. She must have debuted a syndicated TV talk show in 1999, but as I have long lost the actual magazine (just have the cover tear sheet), I can’t remember who she was. This was sixteen years ago… that’s a lot of ink, paint, and scotch under the bridge. UPDATE: Two commenters… READ MORE
