This is a 1/2 page illustration I did for School Library Journal back in 2009 for a story about how magazines were becoming more popular with teenagers at the time. The idea was the kids were ignoring their electronics in favor of physical reading material. Of course I snuck MAD in as one of the magazine. Something tells me the boon in popularity of magazines was short lived. Here is the pencil sketch for that illustration: READ MORE

This is a two page spread I did for the book Inside MAD back in 2013. It was just for the book and never appeared in the magazine. Inside MAD is a large book full of rarely seen reprints of MAD features as chosen by the Usual Gang of Idiots, as well as essays by a number of famous entertainers about how MAD influenced their careers. The introduction of the book is written by the comedy film writer, director and producer Judd Apatow. In his intro, he vehemently points out that MAD never has done a spoof of any of his movies or TV shows. Turn the page, and you see this. Written… READ MORE

This was SUPPOSED to post yesterday for “Illustration Throwback Thursday” but my post scheduler dropped the ball. I did this spot illustration for the Food Network back in 2011 of FN stars Rachel Ray and Guy Fieri. To be honest I am not 100% sure what the purpose of it was, but I know it was not for print or broadcast. I believe it was supposed to be for some internal promo or something similar. The assignment was to do a simple caricature of Rachel and Guy in a “Dancing with the Stars” pose with a simple background. And yes, they asked me to draw them nice and… READ MORE

After I published The Mad Art of Caricature in 2011 I discovered an interesting subset of creators in the world of caricature… woodcarvers. Woodcarving is a popular art in the U.S., and woodcarvers have their own organizations, conventions, and stores dedicated to the tools and resources for carving. Carving caricatures is also a big thing in that world. There are books on that specific subject, and carvers that are known for their caricature work. I found out about this aspect of woodcarving when I was contacted by several different woodcarving stores who wanted to buy wholesale copies of the book for sale in their stores.… READ MORE

Back in 2012 writer and entrepreneur Ryan Sohmer hired me to do the cover illustration for the third Omnibus collection of his feature Gutters. Gutters was a webcomic that spoofed the comics industry and characters therein. The art for each page was done by a different artist, while Ryan did the writing. It was damn funny stuff. Gutters ran from 2010-2014. Ryan’s company Blind Ferret collected the comic in three huge, hardcover volumes. Each cover spoofed some famous picture or painting. Ryan wanted mine to parody the “V-J Day in Times Square”. I did the pencils/inks and it was wonderfully colored by Ed Ryzowski. I… READ MORE

These were a couple of movie props I did for the 2009 film “Super Capers”, featuring the main antagonist character played by Michael Rooker. I did a bunch of work for this movie, including caricatures of all the main actors which were sort of animated for the opening credits, and some illustrations for a flashback sequence that was similarly half animated. These were supposed to be giant oil paintings that hung in the villain’s lair. He was a kind of evil Bruce Wayne, so these were supposed to show him as a daring adventurer, but obviously as caricatures and with gags. READ MORE

I did this for the cover of a brochure for a scientific presentation or symposium or something like that back in 2013. I can’t remember all the details, but the digital file is still floating around on my hard drive! READ MORE

I got tired of typing out “Illustration Throwback Thursday”, so from now on the internets will be using the term “Thurowback”. You’re welcome. Back in November of 2015 My pal and fellow National Cartoonists Society member Jeff Knurek asked me to be the guest artist on his widely syndicated comic feature “The Jumble”. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was about to come out in theaters and Jeff thought doing something around that would be a fun and timely idea. This is what we came up with. Here’s a closer look at the art: READ MORE
