For about 15 years I did work for a client called “The Marlin Company”, who provided signage and visuals for workplaces that helped employers communicate messages to their employees about things like handling stress, safety, etc. Their main product was called the “Marlin Board”, which was a wall frame with multiple different sized slots that accommodated various sized graphics and signage. Companies would subscribe to their service and periodically get new, industry-specific signs and graphics that would fit into the Marlin Board and replace the previous lot. Nearly every month I did a 17″ x 17″ humorous illustration depicting something to do with teamwork, safety,… READ MORE

In honor of the end of the 2019 baseball season here’s a look at a job I did for the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper back in early 2008. This was a full page cover of the sports section (above image cropped a bit) to go with coverage that previewed the upcoming MLB season. That year the Minnesota Twins (and the Royals) were considered to be the ‘little guys” amid three “giants” of the division. Here are some of the pencils sketches I sent in: If I remember right we started out with generic people as players, so no caricatures. I tried a couple of different… READ MORE

Back in 2008 I did a bunch of work on a superhero genre spoof film called “Supercapers” for director/writer/producer/actor Ray Griggs. In early 2009 he had me do a promotional comic book that was a sort of sequel/prequel (time travel story) to the movie that was given out at Wondercon and elsewhere. The 13 page comic was designed, drawn and colored by me, and mostly inked by my pal, comic book superstar Tom Nguyen, although I inked all the faces and two of the full pages. Here is the comic in it’s entirely. You may recognize some of the characters as they are caricatures of… READ MORE

I did this in acrylics for the wedding invites of my pals Robert Sundini and Celestia Ward back in 2007 (I think it was 2007). I sent them the original but it disappeared from their doorstep after the delivery guy left it laying there. It’s either rotting in the Nevada desert somewhere after being blown off their porch or someone has this caricature of two people they don’t know hanging in their den. Both Rob and Celestia are top pro caricaturists and Celestia edited my book The Mad Art of Caricature. READ MORE

Back in early 2000 I started doing work for MAD Magazine clone Cracked. That all started when I showed the new editor of Cracked a parody of “Godzilla” I had written and drawn to show then newly minted MAD Art Director Sam Viviano in an effort to get in at MAD. Sam expressed polite interest and encouragement to keep working at my art, but no job offers. Cracked, which had just been bought by American Media and was looking for new contributors willing to work for a truly insulting page rate, bought that “Godzilla” parody (a three year old film at the time) and asked… READ MORE

This was for a series of really cool trading cards a semiconductor manufacturer named Rochester Electronics did back in 2011. They had a whole cast of characters and the hero, Captain Rochester, fought semiconductor counterfeiting. That might not sound like a big deal but as semiconductors are used in all sorts of equipment and stuff that can actually be very dangerous if bad conductors are used, it was/is a real issue. Anyway, Rochester Electronics did these cards with a lot of artists from the National Cartoonists Society and other well know comic book artists. They even did at least one issue of a comic with… READ MORE

It’s time for another thrilling installment of “Illustration Throwback Thursday”! I did this spot illustration for Beckett Basketball magazine back in 2004. The story was about creating the ultimate NBA player by combining the skills/attributes of different star players, thus the “Frankenstein” motif. READ MORE

I did this cover for the short lived but beloved publication Stay Tooned! This was a wonderful quarterly magazine by editor John Read but only made it for (I believe) 6 issues. READ MORE
