No, not Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito, the Minnesota Twins pro baseball team. Back in the mid 2000’s I did an illustration of the entire Minnesota Twins baseball team roster each year, which was given away as a poster at the ballpark on the last home game of the season aka “Kid’s Appreciation Day”. This gig didn’t pay much, but in addition to a little money I got two full season tickets to the Twins as well as all the stadium giveaway swag. I did posters from 2003-2006 ( I think), and they were all original watercolor/mixed media paintings which the Twins got the originals… READ MORE

These were a series of spot illustrations I did for a magazine called Fade In (now long defunct) back in 2005. The article was about famous Hollywood blunders, embarrassments, or scandals. Pee Wee‘s Engorged Adventure was just one of them. Here’s some of the others… frankly I can’t remember the exact specifics of each one: READ MORE

I did this mock Rolling Stones cover and interior spread for Minnesota Monthly magazine’s year end issue back in 2012. Every year they would do an article on notable Minnesotans of the past year. The circles on the main image were for photo inserts and copy. The blank rectangles in the spread were for copy they dropped in. The only people most might recognize would be Bob Dylan and former Minnesota Timberwolves NBA player Kevin Love. READ MORE

I know this is usually “Illustration Throwback Thursday” but yesterday was a holiday, so I bumped this to today. We recently had a little water damage in a basement storage area and I had to clean the whole room out, digging through a lot of boxes of old papers and file cabinets full of stuff that mostly got tossed out. Some of it was old artwork or copies of same. During the digging I came across this one-page comic I did in 1991. For a very brief period of time I did some editorial cartoons for what was then the Comic Buyer’s Guide, a trade… READ MORE

I did this cover for the Library Journal in 2009. The cover story was about how library budgets were getting smaller and smaller and making survival harder. My colored line style. READ MORE

Speaking of Katy Perry, I repurposed that Sketch o’the Week I posted yesterday for this full pager that appeared in GQ magazine back in 2015… Just had to do a little modification and add some color. It was a gag article about how the NFL is trying to make the Superbowl more woman-friendly. Some of the gags: Players have to wear Spanx rather than football pants Susan B. Anthony painted on all the game balls Mood lighting and aroma therapy in the bathrooms Katy Perry doing the halftime show -Tom is on vacation outside the country, so comment moderation and responses may not happen for… READ MORE

I did this illustration back in 2007 for a series of audiobooks of the original Sir Conan Arthur Doyle Holmes stories called “The Consummate Holmes Canon”, narrated by the terrific David Ian Davies. It was not a caricature of anyone in particular, just my take on a caricature of Holmes. They used different color effects for the various audiobook collections: I believe the eight different collections are still available on Audible.com. If you love Holmes these are some of the most enjoyable audiobook versions you can find… David is like a full cast all in one. -Tom is on vacation outside the country, so comment… READ MORE

Back in 2006 the Minnesota Twins pro baseball team hired me to design this “Little Piranha” character for them, including doing some illustrations for various T-Shirts and other merchandise. Why piranhas? Earlier that year White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was being interviewed about a series with the Twins and called them “Little Piranhas” because while they didn’t kills you with big bites like a shark, they took all these little chomps out of you with their “small ball” style of playing and the next thing you know you are dead. It was a compliment… I think. Anyway the Twins loved that and they made a… READ MORE
