Here are some spot illustrations I did in 2011 for SI Kids. The article was about different types of coaches and I needed to create a cartoon character version of each “type” showing some of their pro and con attributes. We loosely based some of them on real coaches, but not in their facial features. Things like clothing, accessories and demeanor might remind you of certain real coaches in pro or college sports. None of them are even remotely caricatures of real people, though. Here are the final results . . . I think the details of the type is pretty self-explanatory between the illustration… READ MORE

This week’s illustration throwback is a look at some of the illustrations I have done for comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham of his character “Achmed the Dead Terrorist”. Most of these were used for various products like T-shirts and posters sold at his shows. Some are available on his website. This one was done for a game app Jeff did called “Achmed’s Bombsweeper”. Hoo-boy. Anytime I start thinking I might be getting a might overconfident in my work I need only drag out something like this to see how far I’ve come and, by inference, how far I still have to go. Here’s the artwork from my third parody in Cracked, issue #346 with a cover date of August 2000 but was on news stands in the spring of that year sometime. Barry Dutter did the writing and I did all the art, and the layouts, and the graphics/type/word boxes. Some of the caricatures in this one are spectacular failures. READ MORE

As promised from last week, here’s the one piece I did for Penthouse that bordered on being “blue”. The article was about why males tend to think about sex more than females do. I did a “Barbie” on the female figures, meaning I left off the nipples and obscured or left out the genitalia (and their noses! Although Barbies do have a nose) turning them into more like plastic toys than women. I thought that a workable approach, so i did not use a pseudonym in the byline. READ MORE

In all the years I’ve done freelance illustration, this piece is the only one I ever asked to be credited under a pseudonym. I did a fair amount of work for Penthouse magazine, back when there was a Penthouse Magazine, but never did anything “blue”. The art director called me up one day in about 2008 or so and wanted me to do the art for a humorous feature article, and possibly more art for future features. I immediately told him that if the art they wanted needed to include overt pornographic images I was not interested. He assured me they had a lot of… READ MORE

The past three weekends in a row I appeared at comic cons in Anaheim CA, Indianapolis IN, and Chicago IL, respectively. It was exhausting and I got really sick before going down to Chicago, so that last one was a rough weekend. I still had a lot of fun, though, and thank you to all who took the time to come up, say hello and to chat. During one of the many conversations I had with folks, my time at Cracked got brought up. I did four parodies for Cracked back in late 1999/early 2000. All the time I was doing work for them I… READ MORE

I did the pencils and inks (I think) for the cover of this “Mr. Lizard” one shot 3-D comic for NOW Comics, circa 1993. READ MORE

From 1990 to 1994 I did pencils for a comic book title called “Married… with Children” for a company called NOW Comics. I did 26 issues in total (I think). The first several issues were penciled by artists Dave Schwartz and Mark Braun, and I took over with issue number 6. After issue 7 they restarted the numbering (#1’s sold better… shocking, I know). They after Vol. 2 number 7 they gave up on the title run and just started doing mini-series story arcs and one shots. Most of the time they used photo covers of the actors from the show in character (actually most… READ MORE
