After the endless hype and press coverage, I promised it would be some time before I wrote again about the Apple iPhone. The frenzy has died down now so I thought I’d relate my final assessment of the gadget now that I’ve used one for going on two months in the “real world”. When people see me with the phone I invariably get asked one question… does it live up to the hype? The answer is not cut and dried. Since nearly every blog on the planet is heaping either praise or disdain on the newly released iPhone, I imagine most people are sick of hearing about it either way. As such, this will be my last post about the device until there is a significant update or a new version. After all my attempts to convince myself I did not want to buy into the hype and spend time and energy trying to get an iPhone on the day of it’s release, I owned an 8 GB iPhone by 6:20 pm yesterday. Sigh…. I am such a tech toy geek. In my defense, I was actually at the Mall of America at 3 pm yesterday to deliver supplies to my caricature/tattoo booth in the Park at MOA and to meet with a new artist that starts today. We have a wireless home network in the house, with our DSL line connected to a wireless router in my studio. We run a 802.11g Linksys unit and have an extender up on the top floor. My Mac is the only computer hardwired into the router… all the kid’s and The Lovely Anna’s computers have Wireless-G adapters and connect to the internet in that way. We are pretty secure with no broadcasting of a network SSID (the neighbors cannot see our network, and you must know the exact name of the SSID to access it) and password protected login. 802.11n is the latest flavor of… READ MORE

Back when it was announced, I wrote this article on the upcoming iPhone and how candy-like the appeal would be for it… at least for me. It may be a long time before I look into getting one now. I talked at length with a friend who is as AT&T Wireless store manager about the upcoming iPhone. Under condition of anonymity he told me most AT&T employees are unhappy with Apple and the way they are leaving AT&T on the hook for what is sure to be angry customer backlash over Apple’s handling of the ‘release’ of the gadget. The next generation of DVD format war is just heating up, with Sony‘s Blu-Ray and Toshiba‘s HD-DVD still in it’s retail infancy. The upcoming holiday season will be the first real indicator of which one will end up the dominant format, but it may be a year or to before anything is really decided. Clearly high definition is the format of the near future to replace the aging standard DVD. For now early adopters and home theater enthusiasts have their choice of any number of Blu-Ray players from several manufacturers, or the Toshiba line of HD DVD players (I went over many of the differences… READ MORE

I have to admit, when the first iPod shuffle came out a few years ago I could not understand why anyone would want to get one. It was a unit about the size of a half-pack of stick gum, and that tiny size was the only thing it had going for it. It only held a few hundred or so songs, had no way of browsing those songs, could not tell you which song was playing, and just blindly shuffled the tunes with no more control than volume, pause, back to the beginning of the song or on to the next song. Really, I’m not that frustrated over the number of spam e-mails I get these days. No, I actually enjoy spending precious minutes of my day going through several hundred messages in my spam filter folder, checking to make sure there isn’t a legitimate e-mail amid the many stock tips and cheap viagra offers… okay, maybe I am that frustrated about it.
