“30 Crock” Sneak Peek

May 9th, 2008 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Here’s a quick sneak peek at some of the artwork on the parody of “30 Rock” I did for the most recent issue of MAD: Pencil Roughs for Splash Page- Click for a closer look… Final Splash- Click for a closer look I also really enjoyed the show itself, which I found clever and funny. It’s always better, considering the time it takes to do one of these, to have some emotional reaction to the subject matter from which to draw energy. Love it or hate it, either give you some source with which to work. Indifference is the killer… that’s when it becomes difficult… READ MORE

MAD #490 Leaked!

April 26th, 2008 | Posted in MAD Magazine

A little birdie told me that the cover of MAD #490 has been appearing on the internet in a few places, apparently leaked by some Time Warner employee calling himself “Deep Schmuck”. Cover above is from movie blogsite /Film. Interestingly, an actual article from the magazine is also shown on that /Film page: Click to see a close up from /Film Being a good boy respectful of copyright, I will wait until the issue actually comes out to post the contents and some peeks at my piece in it, which I won’t tell you is a parody of 30 Rock, so don’t ask. Roberto Parada Returns to MAD

April 17th, 2008 | Posted in General

MAD #488 was a fairly significant issue for a number of reasons… the first time they did an all concept issue, The missing Dick DeBartolo credit, etc. One major significant item that slipped a little under the radar was the return of former regular MAD cover artist Roberto Parada, who contributed to the magazine for the first time since he did the cover of MAD #437 in March of 2003. That’s a stretch of 5 years and 51 issues. His issue #488 piece (see below) was part of the “MOMA: The Museum of Monkey Art” catalogue parody. Roberto’s fantastic oil paintings had been gracing the… READ MORE

Sneak Peak of Samantha Who?

April 11th, 2008 | Posted in Freelancing

I get the call in mid February from MAD art director Sam Viviano about doing the art for a five page TV parody of a show called “Samantha Who?” “Never heard of it”, I said truthfully. I’m not a big watcher of TV unless I get assigned a show or get hooked on one after I do the parody. “It’s a new sitcom starring Christina Applegate“, he informs me. Hoo boy. Here we go again. Some time ago I blogged a little about my first real job in cartooning, penciling a comic book for a Chicago based publisher called NOW Comics. NOW was primarily known… READ MORE

To Foldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before…

March 31st, 2008 | Posted in General

The Pixie-ish Al Jaffee Al Jaffee is a wonder. If you are lucky enough to meet the man, you’ll see that at 87 he is as sharp as a razor, still has a mischievous twinkle in his eyes and is ever the consummate gentleman. I met Al only once, at MAD holiday party a few years ago when he was still a little wet behind the ears at only 84. I had the fairly newly published book MAD ART under my arm and intended to accost any and all MAD artists at the party and beg them to sign my book on their particular entries.… READ MORE

Coffee and Caricatures- Paris Style

March 27th, 2008 | Posted in General

This summer I posted about the new book coming out illustrated by my friend and fellow member of MAD’s “Usual Gang of Idiots” Rick Tulka entitled “Paris Caf?¬©: The S?¬©lect Crowd“, and how CBS did a new piece on Rick and the book. Well, the book has been out for some time and The Lovely Anna and I have been enjoying our copy. Rick has told me many times about this caf?¬©, Le S?¬©lect, where he has spent the last decade sipping coffee and drawing the patrons, wait staff and passersby in his inimitable style. Author No??⬨¬¥l Riley Fitch and Rick decided to write a… READ MORE
