Book of the Weak Dept.

June 2nd, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Never one to rest on their laurels when a fatter wallet is more comfortable to rest on, MAD puts out collections in book form now and again. Some are “themed”, like the terrific MAD about the Mob and MAD about Superheroes, and some are compilations of decades like MAD about the 70’s. For a while there I was very unlucky about not being included in these collections. MAD about the Mob, a collection of features about gangsters, was ending production just as my two page “MAD look Behind the Scenes of the Sopranos” was published. Likewise my “Spider-Sham” parody missed MAD about Superheroes by a… READ MORE

Bart Visits MAD

May 15th, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Since we are doing video links already this week, here’s one from the Simpson’s episode where the family visits NYC and Bart wanders off to find the MAD offices: I seem to remember hearing about another episdoe (or maybe this same one?) where the MAD offices gets blown up by a missile. Chances are after 9-11 that one won’t be seen on reruns. I couldn’t find that one on YouTube. READ MORE

Dick De’s MAD Tour

May 14th, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD has a Myspace page where Alfred posts announcements and info about the latest MAD stuff. On it Dick Debartolo, MAD’s Maddest Writer, posts comments and other stuff, including installments of a “Backstage Tour” of the MAD offices that are now on YouTube: Part One Part Two There is supposed to be a part three done but I have no idea when it will be posted. There isn’t much to the MAD offices, except for some awesome original cover art on the walls. They moved from the 5th floor to the 4th floor of the building that also houses DC Comics, and they lost some… READ MORE

Dud The Lousy Hunter

May 11th, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine

As promised, here’s a quick sneak peek at some of the art from the parody of “DOG the Bounty Hunter” in this month’s MAD: Pencil roughs of the splash page. Click image for a closer look Final colored art. Click image for a closer look A few panels from the parody… Surprisingly I rather enjoyed the show itself. You have to admire a man who places so much emphasis on his family and God as “Dog” does… even if the people he’s chasing are about as dangerous as your average librarian. TV also works magic on making someone look bigger than life… DOG looks like… READ MORE

Hermann on the Web at Last

April 30th, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Sculpture by MADman Hermann Mejia MAD artist Hermann Mejia has finally gotten a website up showcasing his incredible work. Check it out here. Hermann has been working for MAD for quite some time now, and from the beginning his art was something special. He used to do a feature called “Celebrity cause of Death Betting Odds”, where he illustrated a tombstone with a crazy caricature/statue integrated into it to accompany the odds of various ways the celebrity might met their end. That was a great little feature and made greater by Hermann’s fantastic art. Eventually he started doing parodies of films and TV shows as… READ MORE

Magazines and Dinosaurs?

Yesterday I wrote about the new issue of GAG! Magazine and recommended visiting it’s website. Sadly, upon visiting said site and reading around a bit I saw the inevitable comparison of GAG! to MAD. That always made me angry with the old Cracked, when Dick Kulpa and Co. always had to compare their publication to MAD, of course always proclaiming they were better. Barry suffers from the same delusions apparently, where he says : “GAG! is funnier than MAD, that is for sure. MAD reached its peak in the late 1960s/early 70s, and has been losing readers ever since.” That first comment is just natural… READ MORE
