MAD #14 is a tribute issue to the recently officially retired Al Jaffee, who is inarguably one of the greatest cartoonist to ever put pen to paper. The issue is full of reprints of some of Al’s notable pieces, like his first-ever “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions”, and some famous ones he’s either written, drawn, or both. Even the reprinted movie parody of Steve McQueen‘s “Bullet”, drawn by Mort Drucker, was written by Al. It also contains his final original fold-in, which he did in 2014 in anticipation of his retirement. A few other articles are new ones inspired by some of Al’s famous features.… READ MORE

MAD #14, the Al Jaffee tribute issue, dropped last week… if you can find a place to buy it that is. Almost all the material inside is either reprinted work done by Al, written by Al and drawn by another artist, drawn by Al and written by another writer, or new pieces done as an homage to Al and Al inspired features. With the Daily Coronacature going the last 100 days I have hardly posted any news or other stuff… I’ve been too busy drawing! So, it’s time to address the latest MAD news, which is not all that good. MAD #15 is due to be released in August and will contain some new material. Back in late May MAD stopped accepting solicitations for new work “for the rest of the year”. That includes the year end issue, which is traditionally the “MAD 20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things” of the year. Projects already in the pipeline would be completed, but nothing new would be commissioned except… READ MORE

In fact, the only place you can get this issue is in your mailbox as a subscriber or in digital format on Magzter, ComiXology, or Google Newsstand. MAD posted a sneak peek of this on their Instagram page yesterday so I guess I can share it here. I did the art on this ad parody written by Grant Reed that appears in the latest issue (MAD #13, Jun 2020). While shipments of the printed magazine (and all comic books thanks to Diamond Distribution) to comic book shops are being suspended, MAD is still being printed and sent out via subscription and digital. This issue should be showing up in mailboxes right about now. Digital distribution on April 15th. READ MORE

A few years ago DC had artists for MAD do a series of “variant” covers for some of their titles for the April issue (April Fools Day… get it??) I did the above for Detective Comics #19 in 2013 and the one below for Batman-Superman #10 the next year. It’s the closest I ever got to doing an actual Batman comic book. READ MORE

This was done as an example of how a full color “MAD Sketch Cover” Comic Con commission looks for my display. Since I always sell my example sketch cover, this one is also available at my Virtual ECCC Artist’s Alley Table”. Done in brush pen and Copic marker on a “sketch cover” variant copy of MAD #538. Signed by the artist. FREE SHIPPING in the US! READ MORE

This was one of my favorite TV parodies I ever did for MAD… Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” from MAD #530 Dec, 2014, written by Desmond Devlin. The parody opened with a single page “splash” with three of the main characters (see below), but then opened up into the two page spread you see above. This show was loaded with great characters and great faces. READ MORE
