April 4th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Paste Magazine has an exclusive sneak peek at the cover (by Mark Fredrickson shown above) and one of the articles in the upcoming MAD #545… a parody of the classic children’s book “No David!” entitled “No Donald!”, written by Kenny Keil with art by MAD‘s art director Sam Viviano and colorist Jim Campbell. Here’s the first page: MAD certainly has been on a kid’s book parody kick lately. Check out the rest on Paste Magazine’s website. READ MORE

Monday MADness- The Sheen Lantern!

April 3rd, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Back in MAD #513 (Feb 2012) I did the art for a “MAD 20” piece written by Kit Lively & Scott Nickel making fun of the big bag of crazy that was Charlie Sheen. I have this caricature of him on my comic-con table banner and it often stops people in their tracks because of the funny mash-up concept. The art called for both a main image and spots of mock comic book covers for “The Sheen Lantern”. Pencil rough and close ups of the comic covers below: READ MORE

More on the MAD Move West

March 30th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Since the news broke a few weeks ago about DC finally moving MAD out to Burbank to join the rest of the comic publishing division, I’ve read a lot of opinions on what the results of such a move are going to be. They range from yet another obituary on the death of MAD (these started right around the time Harvey Kurtzman left the magazine in 1956) to those who think in this day and age it doesn’t matter where it’s published, because all the artists and writers are freelance anyway and where the magazine is put together is immaterial. It’s that last one that… READ MORE

Monday MADness: Monkeying Around!

March 27th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Back in MAD #488 (April 2008) the editorial staff decided to do a thought-provoking conceptual theme issue. In typical MAD fashion, they eschewed more meaningful concepts and ideas for something suitably low brow (and I mean LOW… as in simian). The concept they came up with was the “All Monkey Issue”, filled from front to back with gags about monkeys and apes. They even did a parody of the TV show “Monk” with Mort Drucker drawing a monkey instead of the lead character. Tony Shalhoub must have been disappointed (although the monkey looked a little like him more than occasionally)! My job for the issue… READ MORE

MAD’s Move Out West…

March 21st, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

A week or so ago Bleeding Cool broke the news that MAD was apparently following the rest of DC Comics out to Burbank “soon”. Back in 2013 when DC announced they were moving out of NYC and to Burbank, I wrote this post speculating on what would happen with MAD. The short version is I saw four possible scenarios: Enough current MAD editors and art staff make the move that MAD remains the MAD we know and love. DC bankrolls a small, separate MAD office in NYC, and MAD remains the MAD we know and love. DC forms a new editorial and art staff to… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Trading Spaces!

March 6th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This week’s Monday MADness is a look at my art from MAD‘s parody of the TV show “Trading Spaces”, written by Dick DeBartolo in MAD #435, November 2003. Just for fun I did caricatures of some of our neighbors as the “contestants” throughout. That’s the Gerkins in the yellow shorts and the McNeils in the red shirts. They still haven’t spoken to me since. READ MORE
