It is crunch time for the Kickstarter campaign to fund this sure-to-be-great documentary about MAD Magazine, and thanks to many supporters it’s within reach. There are only four days to go, and they are a little less than $8,000 short of their $50,000 goal. That’s close, but even if they reach $49,999.99, they need the full $50,000 if they are going to get a dime. That’s how Kickstarter works…if you don’t reach the goal, you get nothing. They have been stepping up their rewards for support levels. For example, now for $25 you get a physical DVD of the documentary and not just a digital… READ MORE

MTV Geek got an exclusive first look at the cover of MAD #520, announcing the return of MAD’s “The 50 Worst Things About…” feature. This time MAD goes after cartoons. The cover art was done by first time MAD cover artist Chris Houghton, a terrific cartoonist and a great success story. At age 20 Chris was the winner of the National Cartoonist Society Foundation’s Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship in 2009. He has since published is own comic book series “Reed Gunther”, worked as a freelance illustrator doing lots of stuff including a few pieces for the interior of MAD, does comic book work for “The… READ MORE

Only 10 days to go in the Kickstarter campaign to fund this sure-to-be-great documentary about MAD Magazine and it’s 60 plus years of holding a funhouse mirror to the world in general, and influencing generations of humorists in the process. They are woefully short of the $50,000 goal. They need a flurry of activity and a few big sponsors to step up, but they could also use a lot of little sponsors as well. $25 will get you a DVD of the final documentary (updated from the download they previously offered at that level). If enough people do that, they’ll meet their goal. So many… READ MORE

That was quick. The secret project I mentioned on Saturday is already out of the bag! Bleedingcool.com posted the news today that DC Comics will be celebrating MAD‘s 60th anniversary with variant covers of some of their main titles including Justice League Of America, Justice League, Batman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Supergirl, Detective Comics, Batwoman, Green Lantern and Teen Titans drawn by the Usual Gang of Idiots. Since they specifically name me as well as Sergio Aragon?¬©s, Al Jaffee and Peter Kuper, I guess there is no sense in being coy. If you could go back in time and ask my 8… READ MORE

Duct tape can do the impossible As a freelancer you sometimes get a call to do a piece of artwork that is (at least to you personally) so cool that all you want to do is tell everybody . . . but you are sworn to secrecy until it’s either announced or published. Yesterday I got a call about doing a special project that will fulfill one of my absolutely biggest, top-of-the-bucket-list, most long cherished, professional dreams, and I can’t %*&#@ tell anybody! In fairness, it’s probably only a really big deal to me, and I’m achieving it based on a technicality, but what the… READ MORE

This documentary examining the 60 plus years of MAD, produced by Alan Bernstein and Doug Gilford and directed by Alan, has been in the works for a couple of years now. As you can see by the video, the list of MAD contributors already interviewed is pretty impressive. They still have a lot they want to do, though. Yesterday the film makers launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to get the rest of thier interviews done and finish the film. Here’s the pitch: And here’s more info from their Kickstarter page: I hope they realize their goal and get this made. What… READ MORE

Awesome news! MAD Listmeister Mike Slaubaugh has decided to resurrect his MAD Lists site, and continue his labor of love after all! I know that sometimes one can feel under-appreciated when putting so much work into something like this, but when you have the likes of Annie Gaines Ashton (widow of Bill Gaines), MAD writer extraordinaire Desmond Devlin, and MAD artist Rich Powell telling you how much they’ll miss your site (and that was just who commented on my blog post yesterday), it’s easy to see it’s very appreciated indeed. Incidentally, now that I look at the updated lists, I actually passed Wally Wood… READ MORE

I have now been working for MAD for over 12 years…which, incidentally, still makes me the “new guy”. Since my earliest days with the magazine I have been looking forward to a certain milestone . . . having appeared in my 100th issue. That is rarefied air. Less that 40 writers and/or artists have had credits in 100 or more issues of MAD in its 60 year history. My progress at hitting that milestone was greatly slowed down when the magazine went to four times a year in 2009, and only slightly improved when it went up to bi-monthly in 2010. However, I am… READ MORE
