From left: Nick Meglin, myself, Paul Coker, Sergio Aragon?¬©s, Al Jaffee, Jack Davis and Sam Viviano. Clicky to Embiggen. This past weekend I had the distinct privilege to participate in a gathering of some of the “Usual Gang of Idiots” (i.e. major contributors to MAD Magazine) hosted by the Southeast Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia. In attendance were long-time editor Nick Meglin, cartooning legends and members of the exclusive 50 year MAD contributor club, Paul Coker Jr., Jack Davis and Al Jaffee, soon to be member of that same club (next year) Sergio… READ MORE

As promised, here is a sneak peek at some of the images I did for the “Punitive Damages: A Game of Extreme Justice” feature in MAD #512. The video game “cover” The premise of the article was an mock ad for a video game featuring the U.S. Supreme Court Justices, satirizing their decision to allow ultra-violence in video games being targeted at kids as a first-amendment protected right. In the game, the Justices are trying to get past various opponents and obstacles like: Crazed protesters Monster laws and amendments (yes… nod to Schoolhouse Rock!) Fat, former politicians Zombie Founding Fathers Finally, the winner get’s new… READ MORE

This from the editors of MAD via the official MAD Blog, The Idiotical: The postcard you see below depicts MAD founder/publisher William M. Gaines, longtime editor Nick Meglin, and current (and also longtime!) editor John Ficarra “hard at work” in the old MAD office at 485 MADison Avenue. It was illustrated by the one and only Mort Drucker! (Yep, the very same Mort Drucker who used to draw covers for the Bob Hope comic book.) We came across a big stack of them in the stock room, but as you can see, there was a limited number produced: So, Do you want one of your… READ MORE

Over at The Idiotical, the Official Blog of MAD Magazine (this is a very UNofficial blog), they have posted the story behind the cover of MAD #411, otherwise known as the 9-11 cover. The tell the tale of how this: replaced this: at the very last minute, following the events of September 11th, 2001. MAD very correctly decided that, despite the innocent marathon scene, having a cover depicting a crowd of people running through the streets of New York with Alfred jumping a dead body would probably be taken in a different way after September 11th. I won’t recount the entire tale here, you can… READ MORE

The gang at MAD just released a new book, INSANELY AWESOME MAD, that is geared toward the viewership of the animated MAD show on the Cartoon Network. There is an interesting selection of work inside, and it makes you get a better idea of what kind of viewers they are getting, or are aiming at appealing to, with the CN show. There are no movie or TV show parodies. You will find several examples of Sergio‘s “A MAD Look at…”, a bunch of Spy Vs. Spys (all classic Antonio Prohias ones, but nicely colored), several Don Martin classics (also colored) as well as many other… READ MORE
