From The Life Magazine 2011 Photo Blog Award Winners: MAD magazine has been called revolutionary, subversive, surreal, hilarious, and a total waste of time. (The latter by its own editors). That a single publication could fill all of those roles for millions of readers, and thrive, across six decades says a lot about both the human appetite for satire and the unique vision of MAD‘s founder, William Gaines. Here, on the occasion of MAD launching its first-ever blog, Theidiotical.com, MAD‘s editor for the past 25 years, John Ficarra, shares some personal photographs of — and lively stories about — Bill Gaines; the magazine’s happily chaotic… READ MORE

I knew this set was on the way, now it’s officially announced and available for pre-order. The complete collection of Al Jaffee fold-ins from 1964 through 2010. He’s still going strong, so it’s already missing the latest 2011 fold-ins, but would you rather wait until Al kicks the bucket?? He’s probably going to outlive me, so I’m excited about the books! Those MAD guys never tell me anything. I just learned via Big Shiny Robot that MAD not only has an official blog where they will be posting original content, but it’s been up and running since the beginning of May! According to MAD Magazine Editor John Ficarra: “Most blogs are written by ill-informed, untalented blowhards. Given those standards, it’s a perfect vehicle for us!” The blog is really not officially official yet, it’s in a kind of “soft launch” mode, but it is live and operational. MAD takes another step onto the information superhighway . . . and still hasn’t been run down by some… READ MORE

As promised, here is some of the character design work I did on last night’s episode of MAD on the Cartoon Network. The segment was called “The Big Fang Theory” and was a mash-up of Twilight and The Big Bang Theory TV show. It is pretty hard to recognize this art in what ended up on the finished segment… they obviously went in a different direction and only used my designs very loosely, although I did like the more graphic look they came up with: READ MORE

It’s official, you can buy anything on Craigslist. One of the resin statues of MAD‘s Alfred E. Neuman that were made in conjunction with the film Up the Academy is for sale on Craigslist for a paltry $17,000…which is just a little more that half of what Bill Gaines paid to get MAD’s name removed from the film when it was released on video. There are at least three of these statues in existance, the one being sold by this gentleman, one owned by Jim Halperin, and the one pictured above which is in the offices of MAD in NYC. Pictured above with Alfred is… READ MORE

Oops…might have drawn Rich’s nose too big . . . Last month I got an email from actor Rich Sommer, who plays the character “Harry Crane” on Mad Men. Turns out Rich is a fan of MAD Magazine, and also originally from Minnesota. He wrote to tell me he and the rest of the cast loved the show’s parody in MAD, and he invited me to attend a fundraiser for a Minneapolis improv theater he’s associated with. I was able to attend, and got to meet Rich and enjoy the show. I donated a signed copy of the magazine for the fundraiser, which may have… READ MORE

As promised, here’s the splash and some of the art from the parody of “Modern Family” in the latest issue of MAD: Click for a closer look… So, like my flashback with Christina Applegate and the parody of “Samantha Who?” a few years ago, I once again am revisiting my “Bundys” roots and drawing another “Married… with Children” alumni. This time it’s Ed O’Neill: Can Katey Sagal (currently in “Sons of Anarchy”) or David Faustino (currently in… uh….) be far behind? READ MORE
