The Hundreds visits the offices of MAD, no longer on MADison Avenue (okay, they moved from there decades ago) but still a fun place to see. If you look closely you can see the bottom of my original of the splash from “Harry Plodder and the Torture of the Fanbase” just above Hermann’s original from “Road to Perdition” in art director Sam Viviano‘s office. Sam and I had a deal for years that we would trade originals sometime. He gave me the art from his parody of “Halloween” from MAD #376. Then he said he would wait until I actually did something GOOD for the… READ MORE

Yesterday MAD very quietly revamped their website to a new, cleaner and more streamlined design. You can now browse the PDF previews of back issues of MAD and extras like MAD Classics, etc. There are links to the Carto0n Network show and promo videos, “The Untold History of MAD” timeline by Desmond Devlin, a page with downloadable parody posters, and even a collection of the “Idiot of the Issue” feature from the old MAD Classics, which features an interview/bio of members of the Usual Gang of Idiots in PDF form! Nice to see this… yet another sign MAD is not being ignored by the new… READ MORE

Last week I posted a link to the MAD Cover Site and author Doug Gilford‘s great contribution to the collection of well wishes for Al Jaffee‘s 90th birthday, in the form of a comprehensive list of his every contribution to MAD from issue 25 until today. That was pretty impressive. It turns out, you ain’t seen nuttin’ yet. Al’s list is part of an ongoing project by Doug to catalog all the Usual Gang of Idiot’s credits in MAD. That’s an ambitious project! He’s even got all of my credits listed: Tom’s MAD list. My credits pale in comparison to many UGOI’s of course, but… READ MORE

Here is an interesting time line of the evolution of MAD Magazine’s logo: The illustrations within the logo appeared intermittently after the solid color one debuted in MAD #87, and pre-1955 several issues of MAD had a logo that matched the cover concept, like a parody of LIFE magazine in MAD #11, a newspaper headline in MAD #16 and a few other examples. This is from the MAD Mumblings forum I mentioned yesterday, courtesy of contributor Mark AKA “THEMADBUG!” from Australia. The thread it’s from is a petition to get MAD to revert to the classic logo that was used for over 30 years from… READ MORE

©2010 MAD Magazine and E.C. Publications, used with permission … no, sadly this is not the title of a new book from MAD. That would be one beat-up book by the time readers got done doing the fold-ins… all 426 of them. How do I know Al has done 426 fold-ins for MAD? Thanks to Doug Gilford, the author of The MAD Cover Site, that’s how. Some weeks ago I posted an announcement from MAD calling for birthday wishes to be sent in for Al, who turns 90 on March 13th. The well wishes had to be actual cards, letter, etc. and not your garden-variety… READ MORE

MAD writers Arnie Kogen, Dick DeBartolo and Desmond Devlin were tasked by CBC Radio to come up with MAD style titles for the 2011 Oscar nominated films. In this short radio interview, they compare what they came up with and discuss a little about their thought process (or lack thereof). I would make a joke about their having faces made for radio, but that is too obvious. Many thanks to Doug Gilford of the excellent MAD Cover Site and the MAD Mumblings forum for the heads up!
