Q: When you’re doing a piece for MAD, where do you get your reference material? Does the movie company send you a variety of production stills? Do you just do an image search online? A: That process has changed a lot over the years, even in the relatively short time I have been with the magazine. Back in the old days when MAD sold close to (and once over) 2 million copies of each issue movie studios actually lobbied MAD to do a parody of their films. Not with bribe money of course, but by by sending them the press kits and even inviting their… READ MORE

MAD Sneak Peek

As I mentioned before this is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever done for MAD. I just thought Desmond Devlin did a smart job on the writing and I had the opportunity to have a lot of fun with the subject matter. Here’s a few images from the article… Click for a closer look… Click for a closer look… Now go out and buy a copy, you clod! READ MORE

Well, not technically on the news stands until Aug 17th, but some subscribers are already receiving copies in their mailboxes so I figured the cat’s out of the bag anyway. MAD at Comic-Con

Comic-Con 2010 is “in the books” as they say and it was it’s usual exhausting but fun time. This year I did a lot of new things including being on a panel about MAD and the new cartoon show and participating as a guest artist in “Quick Draw” with regulars Sergio Aragon?¬©s, Scott Shaw! and host Mark Evanier. There was a lot of interest in the MAD show on Cartoon Network, premiering on Sept. 6th and featuring some of my artwork. Here is an interview with producer Peter Giradi and head writer and producer. Kevin Shinick… you will spot me once or twice at the… READ MORE

A MAD Rejection

July 29th, 2010 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This letter is making the rounds on the interwebby, so… I first send my work to MAD back in about 1990 and got a rejection letter at that time, but this is not it. As I recall it was in the form of a checklist that had different reasons for the rejection, and it had the same sort of irreverent humor. Sorry now I didn’t save that… it would have been fun to frame up in the studio. READ MORE

Live from Comic-Con 2010

July 22nd, 2010 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Well, here I am in beautiful and sunny clammy and rainy San Diego for Comic-Con 2010. The weather is suppose to improve as soon as this afternoon, but it looks like I might get wet on the way to the convention center this morning. I’ll be blogging from the convention floor and you have my promise: No “BIFF!” “POW!” or other sound effects will be lazily used in any headlines or posts. I’m not sure exactly why I ever go to comic book conventions. As I have written here before, MAD is sort of the red headed stepchild of comics… yes, it’s got plenty of… READ MORE

Q: Why all the secrecy involving the MAD TV show and especially the magazine? I don’t see why you can’t at least say what movie [or TV show or other subject] you are working on for MAD… it’s not like they have any competition out there that might ‘scoop’ them is it? As for the animated TV show, when can we expect to hear some details?? A: Sorry if it seems like there is a Maxwell Smart “Cone of Silence” paranoia surrounding things I post about sometimes. It’s not just MAD you know… almost all the publications I do work with do not want me… READ MORE

More MAD Book Goodness

July 5th, 2010 | Posted in MAD Magazine

A few weeks ago I mentioned the upcoming “MAD’s Greatest Artists” release featuring the great Sergio Aragon?¬©s, which is going to be a must have for the ol’ bookshelf. Well, it looks like the ol’ bookshelf is going to need some extra room this fall for what is sure to be not only another gem about another legendary MAD great, but one that is truly as individual and unique as the artist himself. A biography of the incomparable Al Jaffee is scheduled for release this fall from HarperCollins. Here is the promotional blurb: Al Jaffee’s inventive work has enlivened the pages of Mad since 1955.… READ MORE
