Hard to believe but we are only one month away from the start of San Diego Comic Con. I managed to attend for the first time in a few years last year, and it looks like I’ll make it again this year. I still haven’t figured out how to get a booth space or Artist’s Alley table of my own… at least not before I’m living in a “retirement community” somewhere… so you can find me at the National Cartoonists Society booth a few times during the show as well as a signing at the DC Comics booth. If and when specific times are available… READ MORE

According to this article on NorthJersey.com, a new documentary on the career of the late, great Will Elder screened at the 2010 Toronto Jewish Film Festival back in April to a “pleasantly surprising” turnout. “The Mad Playboy of Art” takes a look inside the life and career of Will Elder, one of the principal founding artists for MAD Magazine and long time collaborator with Harvey Kurtzman. The film is being made by Elder’s son-in-law Gary VandenBergh. From the article: VandenBergh said that Elder was an artist who set the tone for the visual perspective role at Mad Magazine, a bi-monthly satirical magazine, which began as… READ MORE

My contribution to issue #504 was an expansion of the “Toyota Story” idea by writer Desmond Devlin. Originally I did the spoofed movie poster for the MAD website, so they had me revise the image to open the two additional pages of story. I had to make the car into more of an anthropomorphic character, as well as beat up the Toy Story characters a bit more. Here is the original image: Click for a closer look… And the revised one: Then there followed two pages of “story”, which I also did in a fully painted style… sort of a cross between the actual Pixar… READ MORE

MAD #504 officially goes on sale on June 15th, but MAD must have released a sneak peek as these pages by the great Sergio Aragon?¬©s popped up on the internet yesterday on various Twilight fan websites: Click for a closer look… Click for a closer look… Surprisingly most of the Twilight fans loved it, judging by the comments I read. I guess they don’t take their beloved books/movies/cult too seriously after all. I have a short piece in #504 that was quite a lot of work to pull off… definitely outside my comfort zone. I’ll share once the issue hits comic book stores, which will… READ MORE

An updated tribute from a previous post a few years ago: Today is a sad anniversary. Eighteen years ago today MAD founder and longtime publisher William M. Gaines passed away at the age of 70. Working for MAD is great. The people and staff there really respect the tradition and history of the magazine. However I will always feel that I missed out on something special in that I never met or knew Bill Gaines. I started for MAD about 9 years after Bill’s passing. While MAD has of course continued since his death a chapter of it’s history closed on June 3rd, 1992. In… READ MORE

It’s been a while since news of the proposed bio-pic of the life of MAD publisher William M. Gaines saw any light of day. It’s been in the rumor mill for about 4 years now. About three years ago The MAD Blog linked to reports that Joel Eisenberg and his Iron Mountain Media had picked up the film “life rights” of Gaines and planned to co-produce a biopic based on his life. tentatively titled, “Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines”. A year later director John Landis (Animal House, Blues Brothers, Trading Places, etc.) was attached to the project. Just this past week the film project reared… READ MORE
