Dick De Monkeys Around on Shokus Radio

February 24th, 2010 | Posted in MAD Magazine

While Dick De Bartolo is not actually a monkey as depicted above (this was the only caricature I have drawn of him, hence the silly post title) he will no doubt be doing plenty of monkeying around on “Stu’s Show” today on Shokus Internet Radio. If you are not familiar with Shokus Internet Radio, it’s a… wait for it…. radio station on the internet. Stu Shokus has a live broadcast on Wednesdays, and callers and e-mailers can pose questions to his guests who are “top celebrities from the world of television, both in front of and behind the cameras”. Writer extraordinaire Mark Evanier is a… READ MORE

Q: Love reading the blog and getting a little insight into how caricature and MAD Magazine works. One thing I’ve always wondered: when you’re working on a MAD movie or TV show parody, what do you get from the writer? Is it a script, with just words? Does it include sketches? Are you responsible for all the sight gags, or are some of them laid out for you? Who decides the panel layout and what happens in each panel? A: Everything starts with the writer, but there are a lot of hands involved in a MAD parody before the final results are printed in the… READ MORE

Frightening Viewing

This YouTube video is from an episode of the 90’s TV series “Horror Hall Of Fame” and features the story of EC Comics and their marvelous line of horror comics from the 1950’s. Bill Gaines is interviewed for the piece, which was filmed only a year or so before his death. I’m afraid the video quality is not good, but it’s passable. It’s fun to hear about the classic E.C. Artists like “Ghastly” Graham Ingels, Johnny Craig, Joe Orlando and of course Jack Davis. Al Feldstein is also interviewed as well as a few others with E.C. connections. Actually the most frightening thing in… READ MORE

MAD About Super Heroes Vol. 2!!

January 26th, 2010 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This collection of MAD‘s superhero-related spoofs picks up where the first volume left off. It is officially in bookstores now and, of course, available from Amazon. Most of the content in the first volume was classic MAD spoofs from as early as MAD #4’s “Superduperman” on through “Smellville” from MAD #415. Great stuff, but I was depressed as the book came out¬¨‚Ć just after I started doing some superhero movie spoofs and so I missed out on being in it. I definitely made up for it with Volume 2. My “Spider-Sham” parody from #418 opens the book, and other parodies and pieces of mine include… READ MORE

Bunk Blog

I’m pretty busy trying to get a bunch of stuff done prior to yet another (and the last one for the forseeable future) trip out of the country, but I thought I’d share a fun link today. MAD artist Tom Bunk just joined the blogosphere with a bright, shiny new blog that is well worth a look. Tom is a diversely talented illustrator, and the popping eyeballs and squirting entrails he often does for MAD are only a few of the things he draws and paints brilliantly. Of course he’s also well know for his work on Wacky Packages and the Garbage Pail Kids stickers… READ MORE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCDxaiYZXaU My pal, the great animator and illustrator Stephen Silver, has been working on an incredible video series project for some time that is about to come to full fruition this month with the first of several video releases. His project has been to travel to the studios of some of the great legends of cartooning and film them working while interviewing them about their process, their careers and their philosophies about art. All the while the camera is looking over their shoulder and capturing them actually drawings, inking and painting. Not only are these videos going to be fascinating looks into the work of… READ MORE

Snappy Answers to Your Stupid Questions

December 5th, 2009 | Posted in MAD Magazine

If I was in New York City this upcoming Wednesday, this is where I would be at 8:00 pm: If you’ve ever laughed at Mad Magazine’s “Mad Fold-Ins” or “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” you’ve now got a rare opportunity to meet their creator, as comics legend Al Jaffee will be taking the stage with moderator Danny Fingeroth on December 9th at Columbia. A graduate of New York’s High School of Music and Art, Jaffee worked as an editor, writer and artist for Stan Lee at Timely (later Marvel) Comics during the 1940s. In 1955, Jaffee joined “the Usual Gang of Idiots” at Mad Magazine,… READ MORE

Animated Sergio

I found out via the MadMumblings forum that Asterisk Animation is doing a series of short films featuring footage of interviews with MAD legends Sergio Aragon?¬©s and Al Jaffee. One might presume said shorts will be about MAD Magazine, but there is no official indication of that on the Asterix Animation Blog. However they were good enough to upload a clip to YouTube that will not be in any of the shorts featuring Sergio talking about some of the animation projects he’s worked on and how that process differs from doing comics. Unfortunately there are no subtitles… but that is English Sergio is speaking. READ MORE
