Here is a quick MAD job I did earlier this month that just got posted on the MAD website. It’s obviously a parody of the movie poster for Disney’s “UP” featuring the Heene “Balloon Boy” hoax. I needed to approximate the look of the Pixar characters but with caricatures of Richard Heene and the kid. It will probably be printed in the magazine eventually but the image is already available for download on MAD’s website, along with a lot of other parody posters and such. The colors on this thing really got weird on me in CMYK. I’m not sure if that is something related… READ MORE

Black Friday… when completely insane people go out into completely insane crowds in search of deals on whatever. I try to avoid shopping on this day if at all possible. Except from the comfort of my own home, of course! The image above is of another new MAD book that was just released entitled 1001 MAD Pages You Must Read Before You Die (Crammed into 864 Actual Pages). This is another “Barnes and Noble” exclusive book like MAD About the Movies: The Director’s Cut and I am guessing features a lot of classic MAD features in black and white. I have no idea if I… READ MORE

So far 2009 hasn’t been the best of years for MAD magazine. The announcement back in February that as of issue #500 MAD was going to start publishing quarterly instead of monthly was cited by some as the death knell of the publication. I get asked about the reduction in publication all the time, and what I think the future holds for MAD. I think the rumors of MAD‘s death have been greatly exaggerated. There are a number of things in the works right now that bode well for MAD and not only it’s continued publication but a resurgence in it’s visibility and maybe a… READ MORE

Here is a look at the two pieces I have in MAD this issue: MAD 20- Gates Vs. Crowley Everybody remembers the big deal that was made out of “Beer Summit” this summer, when Obama invited Harvard professor Henry Gates and Cambridge police Sergent James Crowley to the White House and had a beer with them and Joe Biden on a patio table on the lawn. More was made out of that than the event that led to their invitation: when Crowley and other police officers arrested Gates on charges of disorderly conduct when he was confronted by the officers when he and his driver… READ MORE

Over at Mark Evanier‘s excellent blog, NEWS FROM ME, he posted a little historical fact about how MAD switched out the cover of issue #122 after Robert Kennedy‘s assassination: The original cover of #122 The revised cover The original cover showed a series of Mort Drucker caricatures of the those people considered the main candidates for president after Lyndon B. Johnson announced he would not seek re-election. After the cover was completed Robert Kennedy was assassinated, and that led to MAD replacing him with Alfred in the upper right balloon. This is not the only time such a thing has happened. In 1991, MAD had… READ MORE

The International Society of Caricature Artists (ISCA, formerly known as the NCN) 2009 Annual Caricature Convention and Competition is just over a week away on November 2nd-7th in Sandusky, Ohio. For caricature artists this is the ultimate event. Whether you work as a live artist, publication or fine artist, if your work involves caricature you could not spend your time and money better than to attend this event. There are some unique things about this year’s convention that makes it a perfect time for non-ISCA members to attend to see what it’s all about. First off, there is not one, not two, not three but… READ MORE

Holy Sequels, Batman! I just found out through the grapevine that MAD is doing a Volume 2 of MAD About SuperHeroes, due out in January. The cover image above is an advance cover and the actual cover will be different. I was bummed out when they came out with the first MAD About Super Heroes as I had just done the “X-Men 2” parody and it missed the publication deadline of the book. I will definitely be well represented in this book, however. It should contain my parodies of “Spider-Man” 1 and 2, X-Men 2, “Batman Begins”, “Superman Returns”,” Iron Man”, “The Dark Knight”, “Watchmen”… READ MORE
