MADness #16: Small/Large Market Teams!

March 8th, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

We continue our Monday MADness chronological crawl through my work for MAD with a look at my 16th appearance in the magazine. This was another “sports” (specifically baseball) related piece written by Scott Lieberman for MAD #421, Sept 2002. It’s also the third (and last) feature I did in black and white for the magazine until the “retro” spoof I did of “Bounty Law” from “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” just a few years ago. I have to say I am embarrassed by that first panel. This might have been done 20 years ago and racial stereotyping was something no one was very conscious… READ MORE

MADness #15- Spider-Man!

March 1st, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

We continue our Monday MADness chronological crawl through my work for MAD with a look at my 15th appearance in the magazine, and my first “Superhero” movie parody. This is a spoof of the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film, written by Dick DeBartolo and appearing in MAD #418, June 2002. I remember I inked a lot of this job while I was attending a National Caricaturists Network convention in Las Vegas in 2002. That splash page features a lot of cameos of people I know. From the far left, the guy in the blue shirt is my pal Jim Batts, the little girl with the… READ MORE

MADness #14: The Royal Tenenbaums!

February 22nd, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

We continue our Monday MADness chronological crawl through my work for MAD with a look at my 14th appearance in the magazine, and my third movie parody. This one was a spoof of the Wes Anderson film “The Royal Tenenbaums”, written by Arnie Kogen and appearing in MAD #417, May 2002. This was (and remains) one of my favorite movie parodies I did for MAD. It’s not a favorite because of the work I did on it…I was still learning the ropes of doing these continuities. I loved working on this one because it was one of the most unique movies I ever got to… READ MORE

MADness #13: Their Team & Your Team!

February 15th, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

My next assignment for MAD appeared in issue #416, May 2002. It was a return to a sports-themed feature called “Their Team…& Your Team…” written by John Prete. I started for MAD at almost exactly the time it switched to a color format. In fact a big part of why I started getting work from them was that they were planning the switch to color and I did my own digital coloring. In the 20 years I did work for the magazine, I only ever did four jobs in black and white. This was one of them. This was, however, the first black and white… READ MORE

MADness #12- Behind Enemy Lines!

February 8th, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD #415 contained my 12th job for the magazine, a spoof of the film “Behind Enemy Lines” starring Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson, written by Dick DeBartolo. The issue was dated March 2002, but the art was done in December of 2001. This was the first movie parody I drew that was written by Dick, and the script was both funny and pretty vicious! The only thing I remember about working on this one was having a really tough time drawing Gene Hackman, and looking back at it now I still don’t like many of the caricatures of him I did. Actually this is one… READ MORE

MADness #11- America’s Most Wanted!

February 1st, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

My next assignment (number 11) for MAD was the art for a parody of the TV show “America’s Most Wanted”, a sort of reality show that featured re-enactments of crimes by known fugitives (played by actors on the show) and interviews with actual law enforcement involved in the investigations, all with narration by the show host John Walsh. There was a hotline number to call if you have seen or have any information helping to capture the fugitive being featured. The show claimed to have led to the capture of over 1000 fugitives in the 25 years it ran on Fox. This spoof was written… READ MORE

MADness #10: Boston Pubic!

January 25th, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

We continue our Monday MADness chronological crawl through my work for MAD (henceforth titled “MADness #xx) with a look at my 10th appearance in the magazine. Remember the early 2000’s TV show “Boston Public”? Neither does anybody else. Although it was a critically acclaimed show at the time, particularly for its diverse cast. It was big enough that MAD did a spoof of it. Once again I teamed up with my CLAPTRAP partner Desmond Devlin to poke some fun at this show in MAD #412, January 2002. This parody was the first time I drew someone I knew into the art, something I would do… READ MORE

MADness #9: Mysteries of Sports!

January 18th, 2021 | Posted in MAD Magazine

We continue our Monday MADness chronological crawl through my work for MAD with a look at my ninth piece for the magazine, a two page article called “The Mysterious Mysteries of Televised Sports”, written by my CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin for MAD #412, Dec 2001. If you have been following along on Mondays, you may be noticing a trend here. Of the nine features I had so far illustrated for MAD, seven of them were written by Des. Some say it’s because no one else wanted to work on his lame scripts, but I suspect it’s because the guy was so prolific there was just a lot of… READ MORE
