I received my comp copies of MAD #16 in the mail the other day. The issue should start showing up in subscriber’s mailboxes in the next week or two, and will be in comic book stores in early October. I won’t do my “contents” post until the issue is officially released, but I can share that this issue has some new material in it, including a new Spy vs. Spy by Peter Kuper, a two page Tom Bunk masterpiece, a two pager by Sergio Aragonés and a fold-in by Johnny Sampson. The mailbag question about “The Batman” trailer yesterday got me thinking about some of the other Batman related stuff I’ve done for MAD over the years. I ended up being the go-to artist for most of the comic-book related movie spoofs, which resulted in my doing the art for all three Christopher Nolan Batman films, and both “Justice League” and this movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. I did the art for this sort of parody of “America’s Top Model” entitled “America’s Next Top Mobster”, written by Desmond Devlin, back in MAD #482, Oct 2007. It was one of just a couple of “mash-up” type spoofs where the characters of one show or film end up in a spoof of another. The animated “MAD” show on Cartoon Network did that all the time. Back in MAD #503 (May 2010) I did the art on a Desmond Devlin authored parody of the TV Show “The Big Bang Theory”… finished splash page above. As you can see, the splash was somewhat atypical of your usual MAD parody opening. Des had the article narrated by Albert Einstein, and the opening spread called for the traditional introductory caricatures of the cast to look like they’d been drawn on a blackboard by Einstein. I did these cover illustrations for a couple of MAD‘s “Bookazines” back in 2016. A “Bookazine” is the modern day version of the MAD Super Specials i.e. reprints collections. They are square-bound publications with heavier, glossy paper kind of half way between a softcover book and a premium magazine format, and usually follow a theme of some kind. MAD has been printing them every quarter for a few years now, although I think they are no longer being produced.
