This week’s Monday MADness is a look at one of the more unique movie parodies I’ve done for MAD, “Green Lantern” from MAD #510, August 2011. written by Desmond Devlin. It was not unique because of the film, but because of a rare instance of the MAD editors cutting a gag of mine, some experimenting on my part with my process, and a bizarre request for a cameo. First, the MAD edit: This was my pencil rough for the splash page: The “finger” ring construct was my gag. It’s not very often the editors step in and nix a gag I come up with, but… READ MORE

This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the splash and one more page from MAD #430 (June 2003)’s spoof of “X-Men 2”. I’m posting this because star Shawn Ashmore mentioned he did not know he’d appeared in MAD way back then, he thought his appearance in the spoof of “The Following” in 2014 was his first time getting into MAD. Here you go, Shawn! READ MORE

From “Muddled Family”, MAD #509, June 2011. Writer: Arnie Kogen. I always liked this caricature of Ed O’Neill. It was weird going back to drawing him after doing all those issues of “Married…with Children” comics back in the early-mid 90s. READ MORE

In a couple of weeks Showtime’s “Homeland” begins its final season. MAD spoofed the show back in #523 (Oct 2013) with art by me, written by David Shayne. The splash page of the spoof is above. In an interview for the Hollywood Reporter, series star Claire Danes has this to say about the popularity of the show: There were parodies on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and in MAD magazine. That’s a real sign that you’ve made it, getting roasted. – Claire Danes on the popularity of “Homeland” That’s an opinion shared by a lot of people who make TV shows and films. Not going forward, of course. :/ READ MORE

This week’s Monday MADness is a look at the splash page from MAD‘s parody of “The Following” from issue #525 (Feb 2014) written by the great Arnie Kogen. This parody has the dubious distinction of being the only parody I did the art for 100% digitally… inks and all. It was an experiment on my part just to see if I could do it, if it saved time, and if the results met my expectations. The answers were yes, no and no. Don’t get my wrong, I am not disparaging digital inkers. There is fantastic work being done digitally that I greatly admire. It’s just… READ MORE

The gag Desmond Devlin wrote in that first panel still makes me laugh out loud. This was from the parody “The Dork Knight” in MAD #495, Nov 2008. READ MORE

Well It’s not Monday but it sure feels like it. Whenever I do a workshop or a presentation of some kind I usually wear a MAD shirt. I’ve got a few of them, and even have some I did the art on myself… both officially licensed and unofficial bootlegs. The one above I did just for myself, as DC/WB has no merchandise with the new MAD logo on it. I print it on an inkjet printer on heat transfer paper and then heat press it on a shirt. I can’t sell you one so don’t ask. I also did these designs that were made into… READ MORE
