Monday MADness: Last NYC MAD

February 12th, 2018 | Posted in MAD Magazine

MAD #550 is starting to show up in subscribers mailboxes and digitally via the MAD app, etc. (Cover above by Mark Fredrickson). I’ll list the contents as always in the week the issue is due on newsstands, which is next week Tuesday. This was the last issue produced by the New York City MAD staff, although the last production touches and the ceremonial sending off to the printer actually took place in the new year at the new offices in Burbank. Word is the new LA MAD staff added the copy above the logo on the cover, and the back cover image teasing the “New… READ MORE

Wrapping up my foray into the Harry Potter parody world, here’s a look at MAD‘s spoof of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”: “Harry Plodder and the Torture of the Fanbase” written by Desmond Devlin and appearing in MAD #480, Aug 2007. Below are my pencil roughs, followed by the final art for the rest of the 7 pages (clicky the spreads to embiggen): READ MORE

Monday MADness- Harry Plodder and the Lamest of Sequels!

January 29th, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

Last week I shared art from one of MAD‘s parodies of the Harry Potter movies, and since I did art for three of the eight film parodies I thought I’d do a run of “Harry Potter”. So, this week’s Monday MADness is a look at the complete parody of the second Harry Potter movie: “Harry Plodder and the Lamest of Sequels”, written by Desmond Devlin, from MAD #424, Dec 2002. at 9 pages, this was the longest parody I ever did for MAD… until the next issue that is! Monday MADness- Dave Berg Tribute!

January 15th, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

Dave Berg was a contributor to MAD for 46 years, from his first appearance in 1957 up until his death in 2002. He did quite a few different things for the magazine early on but he was most famous for his feature “The Lighter Side of…”, which first appeared in MAD #66 in October of 1961. When Berg died in 2002 he had a number of “The Lighter Side of…” gags in the works for MAD #427, written but unfinished. MAD assigned these to eighteen different MAD artists to complete and published them as a tribute to Dave in that issue. These included work by… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Two and Half Wits!

January 8th, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

Here’s a look at both the finished art and the (very) rough pencil sketches for MAD‘s parody of the TV show “Two and a Half Men” from MAD #450, February 2005, written by Arnie Kogen. The bottom right panel of page features a caricature of Grant Geissman playing the guitar. Grant is a historian /expert on EC Comics and MAD Magazine, the author of several books on both subjects, and a longtime friend of MAD. He’s also a world class musician and composer, and he wrote music for the TV show “Two and a Half Men”! Thus, the cameo. See the note? Just letting the… READ MORE

Mon.. er… Tuesday MADness: Bo Book!

January 2nd, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

The now former art director of MAD Magazine Sam Viviano reminded me of this project while we were exchanging emails and reminiscing recently. Not only was it my first book with MAD, but it was also one of the toughest deadlines I was ever challenged with. The book was called Bo Confidential: The Secret Files of America’s First Dog. Bo was, of course, the first pet the Obama’s brought into the White House. He was a 6 month old Portuguese Water Dog, and he got a LOT of media attention. Naturally the folks at MAD thought that was ridiculous, so they quickly wrote a short book… READ MORE

Mon… er… Tuesday MADness: Green Lantern!

December 26th, 2017 | Posted in Monday MADness

This week’s Monday MADness is a look at one of the more unique movie parodies I’ve done for MAD, “Green Lantern” from MAD #510, August 2011. written by Desmond Devlin. It was not unique because of the film, but because of a rare instance of the MAD editors cutting a gag of mine, some experimenting on my part with my process, and a bizarre request for a cameo. First, the MAD edit: This was my pencil rough for the splash page: The “finger” ring construct was my gag. It’s not very often the editors step in and nix a gag I come up with, but… READ MORE
