Monday MADness- Goodnight Batcave Roughs!

April 17th, 2017 | Posted in Monday MADness

Here’s a peek at some of the preliminary sketches I did to work out how we were going to handle the look of Batman for Goodnight Batcave. Originally he started out more comic-bookish, and then we started working him toward a more cartoony and exaggerated form, loosely based on the “Batman- The Animated Series” look. His chin got even bigger and his upper body more exaggerated in the final roughs:   READ MORE

Monday MADness- The Sheen Lantern!

April 3rd, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Back in MAD #513 (Feb 2012) I did the art for a “MAD 20” piece written by Kit Lively & Scott Nickel making fun of the big bag of crazy that was Charlie Sheen. I have this caricature of him on my comic-con table banner and it often stops people in their tracks because of the funny mash-up concept. The art called for both a main image and spots of mock comic book covers for “The Sheen Lantern”. Pencil rough and close ups of the comic covers below: READ MORE

Monday MADness- Happy Birthday Al and Sam!

March 13th, 2017 | Posted in Monday MADness

Image courtesy madmagazine.com It’s a MAD dual birthday today… in fact it happens on this day every year! Yes, today is the birthday of both legendary “MAD fold-In” creator Al Jaffee and longtime MAD artist and current MAD art director Sam Viviano. You see above Al accepting Sam’s award for picking such an excellent date for his birthday, and Al thinking how nice it is to know he could still crush Sam’s hand like a rotten egg despite having been born 32 years earlier. Al is 96 today, and still delivers his completed MAD assignments to the offices by hand, and they are still as… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Trading Spaces!

March 6th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

This week’s Monday MADness is a look at my art from MAD‘s parody of the TV show “Trading Spaces”, written by Dick DeBartolo in MAD #435, November 2003. Just for fun I did caricatures of some of our neighbors as the “contestants” throughout. That’s the Gerkins in the yellow shorts and the McNeils in the red shirts. They still haven’t spoken to me since. READ MORE

Monday MADness- Terri Schiavo Media Circus!

February 27th, 2017 | Posted in Monday MADness

As promised in yesterday’s mailbag, here’s a look at the MAD 20 piece I did the art for back in MAD #461, Jan 2006, dealing with the Terri Schiavo story. A quick search showed that I shared this a few years back already, but it deserves a second look. The art I did has a kind of haunted feel to me because of the juxtaposition of the circus images and the tragic depiction of Schiavo in her hospital bed. It’s a rare instance where humor is used in a depiction of something that is anything but funny.  Here’s the original concept sketch where the layout… READ MORE

Monday MADness- Corporate Colleges!

February 20th, 2017 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Back in issue 491 (July 2008), MAD decided to poke a little fun at the idea of “corporate colleges” like McDonald’s “Hamburger University”, and what other corporations might teach at such a school. Writers John Samony and Scott Maiko came up with this. Pencil roughs followed by final art (notice we changed the “Best Buy College” image in the final):   READ MORE
