In just a couple of weeks I’ll be at New York Comic Con, which will mark the first major comic con I’ve appeared at since C2E2 back in Feb of 2020, when the world was so naive and COVID-19 was something we’d just started hearing rumbles about. Well, in celebration of being back at in-person cons, I’m releasing a new book Sketch o’the Week, Vol 4! Like the previous three volumes, this one is chock full of sketches and other works from the last 16 months or so (100 caricatures, in fact). I’m placing it in the Studio Store for preordering if anyone is interested.… READ MORE

I’ll be doing a live interview tonight at 8:00 pm EDT (7:00 Minnesota time) with comic book artist extraordinaire (and fellow National Cartoonist Society member) Graham Nolan on his YouTube channel “The Storytellers”. We’ll be talking about MAD, caricature, CLAPTRAP, influences, comics, and other stuff. Graham asks great questions and also takes questions from viewers, so drop by and sit back and watch, or jump in with some questions! READ MORE

A few comic book conventions are tentatively peeking their heads out of the foxhole and making plans to take place in person in 2021. ReedPop, the company that puts on several big conventions, just opened Artist’s Alley applications to creators for their shows in 2021. I just applied for both New York Comic Con in October and C2E2 in Chicago in December. I will not be able to do the San Diego Comic Con “Special Edition” in November or Emerald City Comic Con in December. I think it’s pretty certain these events will take place, but what they look like compared to previous years is… READ MORE

Des did the honors in our regular Tuesday CLAPTRAP update today, announcing the twelfth and final movie parody for our upcoming book CLAPTRAP… we added a Christmas film! That’s right, the original “Die Hard” was never spoofed in MAD, and we’re going to give it the business in our book! That makes our full list the following: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker The Shawshank Redemption Psycho Goodfellas The Big Lebowski Toy Story 4 Unforgiven Blade Runner The Blues Brothers The Princess Bride Citizen Kane Die Hard Phew. I’d better get back to work! Remember, you can always pre-order your copy here, and don’t forget… READ MORE

I’ve done a number of podcast interviews in the last year or two, but this one is definitely a favorite. From the Middle is a “comedy, entertainment, and culture podcast” hosted by Kory and Dillon Hubbell and Kendall Eilola. There are a lot of those types of podcasts, but Kory told me that they made an effort to ask questions of guests that are not your typical type of questions… and he was right. At no point to they ask what pen nib I use. We talk about family, the comics and illustration industry, making a living as a cartoonist in the 21st century, and… READ MORE

My Virtual Artists Alley table is closed up! Thanks to all who stopped by. I have an ENORMOUS list of commissions to do that will take me a long time, especially while I’m working on CLAPTRAP and other freelance jobs. Gotta get back to the drawing board! READ MORE

This Friday March 26th was supposed to be the start of the big three day 2021 C2E2 comic con, but it has of course been cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic. It’s been rescheduled for Dec 10-12, and we’ll see if shows like this are back to being allowed by then. Let’s hope so. I’m hoping I can make it if they do. In the meantime, I am going to do another “Virtual Artist’s Alley” table event on the dates I would have been sitting in a real artist’s alley table at McCormick Place in Chicago. Like the ones I did last year, I’ll be… READ MORE
